Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Thanks, jimbob2010, you'll be happy to know at least 2 iPhones have been fixed with the heat gun already. It's nice to provide a safer alternative.

Also, I plan to make a 3rd video using your technique with the soldering iron. However, I've never done the repair using your method so I'm just going to explain how you did it and link them to your forum post. If you have a YT channel or blog or something let me know and I'll link to it too. This will give people 3 methods to choose from, two of which that don't risk the whole board.

just realised that it is one month since successfully baking my iPhone 3G 8GB. still works as it should, even after updating to OS 4.1 😉

reading all the posts of successful and failed bakings I assume, having the right temperature might be crucial. (leadfree) soldering always was a kind of a tightrope walk: reaching (and maintaining for a certain time) the necessary temperature for good soldered joints without damaging the pcb (e.g. deformation or melting of plastic parts or the laminate of the pcb or blowing capacitors).

Thanks for the update, paraglider, mine has lasted the past month too.

Temp is obviously critical, however, some people have reported failures even though they were careful with the temp. Therefore, I'm thinking the heat gun is the safer way to go.

Another possibility is to add mass to the oven (cast iron pans, etc.) to even out the temp distribution in the oven and stabilize it so the oven doesn't fire up mid-bake to try to bring the temp back up. It may be that as the thermostat notices the temp falls it may kick in the heating elements causing a short term spike that kills the board.

Even though the oven worked for me, I'm not comfortable with it now that I know how to do it with a heat gun.

So I don't think I have quite the same problem. My phone sees the wifi but does not connect over it- it tries to connect over 3G, which won't work if I'm trying to use the remote app. The 3G does work and wifi will work as long as I turn off 3G, but the **** 3G won't turn off. I'm not quite ready to bake my phone (it overheated a little while ago and now my screen has pixel problems where all black is red) but if I could just make the **** 3G stay off I'd be fine.
