Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

2nd time done the heat gun reflow, my wifi is ALIVE! First time i did it only lasted for few minutes and then disconnect. But then it connects again after some time. So i did the heat gun reflow again just now and the connection is steady! hope it fixed it permanently.

By the way, i used 560 degrees celsius for 1 minute the first time and the second time i used the 560 degrees celsius for 1m and 10secs. So i hope this helps someone.

Solution... give up on DHCP with the upgrade, it killed my son's wifi too... keeps setting a bogus IP not even in our domain. Go to General - Network - your wirelss network and configure it to manual. Usually the DNS and Router are the same address... you will need to know your router details or copy from another PC or iPhone... including your available IP range, so you do not manually add a number used by another device on your private network.

Hi, I was just wondering if my ipod's wifi was broken or every wireless router in my neighborhood is useless. I have tried doing just about everything to my router just short of disabling all security, but that doesn't really matter since there is an unprotected network next door. Also i have eliminated most software problems having followed the apple support page's instructions 5 separate times. The only thing I haven't tried is to just downgrade the software to 2.0 or lower.

I am sadden to say that I am one of those users that lost their WI-FI settings after APPLE's upgrade. I love APPLE and their products but, after this major fiasco and no word from APPLE shows me Apple does not care for me as a customer; nor you.

-->Was this deliberate?
-->Was the chip designed to fail after 2 years?
-->Was the chip cheaply made to force another purchase after 2 years?
-->Did Apple's FIRMWARE upgrade make the phones fail? deliberately?
-->What has been the response of Apple?
-->Warranties are only good for 2 years so you are DEAD if no warranty
-->Apple knows phone fails after upgrade? Will they offer to help loyal ones?
-->Are you forced to sign new contracts/buy new phone after failed firmware?
-->Is it ok for Apple to bank on our busy lives to just GIVE UP?
-->Apple has other new products, maybe you switch? Either way Apple Wins User uploaded file

If we only knew...Apple knows Apple customers tend to be loyal and usually will purchase another product and is banking on that. How does this make you feel?

What else are they banking on? Are they banking on known facts that we will continue to give them our loyalty? Why? If your car had a major recall and they could not fix the problem...what would you do? Would the lemon law help in this kind of situation as a recourse for you? Would you purchase the same make and model? Would you stay with the brand?

From what I can see (and read through this very long thread); Apple does not care. I did a research on the iPhone 4 having the same issue (probably using the same chipset). No recalls from Apple and does that seem right?

What needs to happen for Apple to sit up and take notice? What needs to happen for Apple to stop selling inferior parts, pushing out bad firmware updates (with full knowledge there is a problem) to their loyal customers?

Can anyone please tell me? Will Apple do the right thing by their loyal customers?

Disgruntled until Apple steps up.

OK, I see that even after so much time there is no offical response from Apple about this issue. I also see that the fridge hacks are now replaced by owen hacks. That makes more sense to me, but still very risky.

I have a question for the community: is there anyone with 3G on a very old 2.2.1 firmware who upgraded straight to 4.x and that Wi-Fi remained working fine?

In my case, I had two wi-fi fails on 3G and I have replaced them within warranty, but the last one is now out of warranty and it's still on 2.2.1 as I was affraid to kill it with the upgrade for the third time. Now I am wondering is there any happy scenario case with 2.2.1 to 4.x upgrade? Thank you very much!

My iPhones wireless died last week after upgrading to 4.3. I hAve since upgraded again to 4.3.1 and I still have a problem. Phone out of warranty so I think I'm now left with an iPhone with no wifi. I also have a work iPhone on the same OS and everything is fine so I know there are no issues with my router or network. Why cant apple admit there is a problem. I was contemplating buying an iPad but that's not going to happen now. I know one lost sale means nothing to apple but if everyone was made aware of these issues then sales might drop and then they would take notice

same problem here! I upgraded my iPhone 3 to the new software and then the wifi stopped working. It has been about 3 months now without wifi. I just upgraded again today, and it still will not work!

big problem is... I am now going over my AT&T data limits and keep getting nailed with over charges! User uploaded file phone is not under warranty (class action lawsuit anyone????).

Is this an elaborate way to get iPhone 3 users to upgrade to the iPhone 4?

same problem here! I upgraded my iPhone 3 to the new software (4.2.1, baseband 5.15.04) and then the wifi stopped working. It does not find the networks which are not using channel 1 and when I try to connect, it says "Unable to connect to the network". I re-stored the phone couple of times thru itunes but no luck 😟

I spoke to Genius in apple store and they tried to restore without any luck and then gave me suggestion to buy new one. My phone is out of warranty and and with no wifi now.

I am cursing for the day I decided to upgrade my phone. Please apple do something.

UPDATE/SOLUTION: holy cow... I found a solution!

BTW: I went to apple store - zero help, they had no idea about this problem that does not seem to be on anyone's radar.

solution (not a very good one, but it will work!): since I cannot connect to WIFI for 3++ months, I never use apps anymore and rarely download new ones. So... this week is Masters week, and I downloaded the Masters app (only 4mb), and miracle... AFTER CONNECTING TO THE ITUNES STORE (for the first time in months) TO DOWNLOAD AN APP... MY WIFI MAGICALLY STARTED WORKING!

more: 24 hours later, the wifi was dead again, so this time, I launched my 'ITUNES APP' icon & clicked on the 'PING' feature & magically I got my wifi login prompt again.

conclusion... if you have an iphone 3.0 phone and upgrade to 4.X software, your wifi will be busted up until you manually force a connection to the app store / itunes store. This is a terrible long term solution, but it worked for me.

please reply and let me know if this works for anyone else.

side note: dear Apple engineers, I kindly and humbly ask for a small token of appreciation for my solution to this rogue problem. A free iPad would suffice.

good luck everyone!

Same problem here. I've even tried downgrading to ver 3.1.3. It can see the router better, but either wont connect with a password, or will connect with no password, but with no WiFi logo at top and continually drops the connection (both with and without static i.p.).

Really want to get an iPad 2, but it seems some of them are having similar problems

I have been using Macs for over 20 years. It's the first time I've started to doubt their support or if it's worth buying another Apple product.

Hi I had the same problem. But i managed to fix it.

first i reset my network settings on the iphone and turned it off. Then i unplugged my internet router for 20 seconds and let the router reboot. After it rebooted, i turned on the iphone and looked for my wifi connection and entered my password. Lo an behold, I can now get wifi on my 3g. I think the important thing here is dont just reset your router, you need to unplug it for a bit so it resets the ip
