Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

The wifi dropping has been driving me nuts. It's only started since 3.0. Before, it has always stayed connected, never had conflicts on the network, and was never an issue. But since 3.0, like a lot of others, it can't hold the connection for more than 20 seconds without releasing.

*The solution* that has so far worked for me is, in the router settings, I turned "RIP" setting to RIP_1, from the disabled setting it was on before. This has solved the problem for the last 4 hours straight. No more dropping. I read this worked for some others over on a Netgear forum. It did not work for all, but I'm happy for now. Give it try, it can't hurt.

Arrrggghhh...wifi worked fine after OS3.0 update for iPhone 3G until yesterday...now no wifi recognition at all. Home wifi working fine. Apple have walked me through numerous reset options including just toggling the airplane flight mode button - think that was clutching at straws.

Currently synching phone and will then restore to 'new' as advised by Apple...apparently this 'sometimes works'. Other than that it is off to Singtel to hand the phone in for repair. And get this, the phone will be returned to the factory in China and I will receive back a 'remanufactured'device...remanufactured! My phone is only 4 months old in pristime condition and yet I could receive back a phone 2x or 3x this age. I do not care how well 'remanufactured' it is...this is an outrage and not what we pay all this money for.

I am a really Apple fan...several types of iPods, MacBook and a MacBook Pro but this is really trying my patience!

There is no way I will mess with my router in an attempt to make it compatible with 3.0.

This is Apple's problem because 2.2.1 on the same router works fine and it's not just about my private router, it's about every single one I have tried to connect - from my office, public hot-spots, other offices and homes...

Apple must fix this, not the whole world around it.

Well for now it appears to be a RIP issue, my Airport Extreme and Express give me no problems when I connect at home but my Netgear router at my studio was causing me to pull my hair out. So I followed swampdog43's advice above and for now all seems to be working well on the wifi front. I am using a Netgear Router model DGN2000, in the admin under LAN Setup I switched the RIP Direction from None to Both with the RIP Version set to RIP-1.

Hope it helps others.

Hmmm before dowgrading to 2.2.1 I also tried to set RIP-1 in my ZyXel router 660HW but it had no effect at all. I triend B+G, B-only, G-Only, G without g+, setting ESSID visible, removing MAC filter, turning off other devices connected via WiFi... and the firmware is the very last one (340PE11C0)! But the connection speed was only 30 Kbps!! I noticed the problem as soon as finished the upgrade to 3.0 with iTunes. Then I deicded to restore from the scratch the OS 3.0_7A341 purchased from Apple via iTunes. This did not solved the problem!! After downgrade to 2.2.1 speed is back to turbo and stability is very good.
I add that I tried to use BT with a plantronics headset (the one I use with my Nokia) and does not work at all!! Nokia finds iPodTouch but iPodTouch does not find any device... and after many minutes searching for BT devices times out!
So even BT does not work!!
In any case I miss OS 3.0 for the search engine and for the extra button in podcast section that allows speeding up audio and go 30 sec back while listening.
I hope Apple will fix the WiFi fix as soon as possible, meanwhile I'll run 2.2.1!

Same problem here. I know a few people with 3.1 beta and it does NOTHING to help. I called Apple Care and they give me the same old Restore Reset and Retry routine. I've returned it twice and I still get a bum Iphone. I try to give Apple a good name yet they have fail at every demo performance and had me looking foolish for buying this crap. They never speak up to anyone over the issues and try to inform anyone that they are working on it. Instead they wait until it goes public to the media and still they just hopes it goes away. I swear if this is not resolved by the end of the week it goes back.

I lost my wifi immediately after the 2.2 update and was told to wait for 3.0... now I'm being told to wait for 3.1. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!! I'm tired of getting "this item is over 10 mb, please use wifi to download" then cant because I dont have WIFI. Thing is I need to reload items I bought from itunes, but cant because they're over 10 megs. This is the first and LAST Apple product I will ever buy, and I will let everyone I know to stay away from Apples buggy products. My brother talked me into buying an iphone because "Apples stuff is rock solid and free of bugs." Whatever, I'm now dubbing my phone as "iJunk" when anyone ask me about it.

What makes me so upset is they wont fix it, and support acts like it's my fault. They wont replace it even though it's THEIR buggy software that messed it up. Worst support I have ever seen!!! I know its not just me either, look at all the people who're posting in this thread.

If 3.1 does not fix this issue, I SWEAR I'm going to take my iPhone and throw it through my local AT&T's window, stop all payments to them and boycott Apple products for life.

"Make sure you upload a video of throwing the iphone through the window, it will get a ton of YouTube hits. (-;"

Thats and excellent idea, maybe if I can get some publicity they might address the issue.

"
If you provide some actual info about your issues, there are folks here who can help you troubleshoot your wifi network"

When I try to connect to ANY wifi it says "Could not scan for wireless networks". And NOTHING has been able to fix it, tried everything in this thread and other forums... nothing. It will not auto find any wifi's connections either, like it just cant see them. Very frustrating, I'm paying full price for an incomplete product.
