Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Same problems here with my 2G iphone, reverting back to2.2.1 did not reverd the problem with wifi so my guess is that 3.0 chanced something it should not have.
Also if i leave push on the phone gets very warmm and the battery us drained within a couple of hours, without even touching it.

Hope there will be an update that fixes these problems quickly and not in like 2 months or so pffff.

I hope I'm not speaking too soon because I've only just fixed my similar iphone problem.

I couldn't connect to my wifi at home. (Whenever I tried to connect my iPhone it screwed the router and brought my whole broadband connection down!) I replaced my router (something I was able to do for free and it was overdue for an upgrade). I reset my network settings and MANUALLY set the network details. For some reason, the iPhone wouldn't connect to the network it discovered automatically.

I have no idea what the original problem was or why it is now working. Was the iPhone assuming a different type of encryption to that set at the router? That would be consistent with what I saw.

Anyway, I'm using WPA2 encryption, BT HomeHub2 broadband (I can't see the router model number)

Hi folks,

I've been watching this thread as my 3G started dropping wifi connections a few days ago, the eventually was unable to detect networks or connect to them manually.

- Reset network settings didn't make any difference
- A system restore made no difference (both before and after restoring from backup)

However, I've just dug out my old classic iPhone, system restored it, upgraded to OS3 and then restored from my most recent backup. Wifi now works fine.

This says to me there's nothing config wise causing this and unless there is something different between the OS3 upgrade downloaded today and the one downloaded previously, nothing software wise. It looks very much like a hardware failure although whether it was caused by OS3 or not I have no idea.

Apple don't offer on-line support for phones bought through O2 so I'll have to take it to a store when I can and hope they'll swap it out under warranty.

Hope that helps somebody.

Same s**t here. Cannot believe that this is happening! We all payed a lot of money for these phones and can expect a quick solution to the problem rather than a non-responding Apple Support Team. Waiting for 3.1 just doesn't do it for my guys!
This is unexcpetable for my part. I am forced to use my data plan which is restricted to 300 MB (exceeded that already!) because I usually am in proximity of a Wi-Fi network. So now, I am literally blowing my money for no reason what so ever - oh yes there is one: 3.0! Please at least come up with a working solution for this. I've tried everything so far.

Well, I brought mine to the Apple Store... They recommended for me to reset my router and maybe pick a different security option. I also reset my network settings on my iPhone... All seems to be working well now.

I also addressed the battery issue... They told me to recondition the battery by letting it completely drain and charge it fully while keeping the phone off... We'll see about this one as I thought todays batterys were smarter than that....

iPod Touch WiFi on OS 3.0 is BUGGY!!
I have a brand new IPT bought 2 months ago and coming with OS 2.2.1 and WiFi was rocksolid and fast!! 4000Kbps in D/L with spikes of 5800Kbps... after upgrading to OS 3.0 speed dropped to only 30 kbps!! This is a big flaw in the new OS 3.0 and I'm very disappointed with Apple. Can't be true that they missed such an issue! I tried to restore 3.0 from the scratch, changing router settings (ZyXel 660HW) from mixed mode to B only and the to G only, resetting network settigs in IPT, turning off push, using static IP or DHCP... well everything but with 2.2.1 it worked perfectly. Now it is hard to download app or podcast from ipod... too slow really too slow... APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE ASAP!
PS) I'm considering to downgrade to the 2.2.1 and waiting for 3.x update that fix this problem.

SOLVED with DOWNGRADING to FW 2.2.1 (5H11a)
--------------------------------------------
I solved the iPodTouch 2G OS 3.0 slow WiFi issue downgrading to the previous OS 2.2.1
I am missing the new features for sure but WiFi speed is really important for such a device.
Now WiFi speed rocks, download speed 4000Kpbs!! Phew... as previously stated with OS 3.0 was as low as 30Kbps, no more apps, no updates, no podcast downloadable in reasonable times!
I suggest you to check with one of the speedtest apps available on the app store and were it the case to downgrade to OS 2.2.1
To downgrade it is necessary to enter DFU mode by (1) connecting ipod to computer with latest iTunes running (2) turning off iPod by keep pressing sleep button (3) the pressing sleep button + home button for 10 seconds (4) releasing sleep button but keep pressing home button... after some 8 seconds iTunes finds an iPod connected and asks you to restore before proceeding (5) at this point press shift key on the keyboard and click with mouse on restore button on iTunes. You will be able to look for a firmware file on your HD. You could have it in "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates" or download it before starting.

PS) Note that if you simply connect iPod to the computer, open iTunes and shift select the restore button... you will end up with an error. You have to enter DFU mode to downgrade.

PPS) I hope the slow WiFi issue will be solved in OS 3.1, meanwhile I have been told that for now 3.1 beta version has the same problem.
