Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

reading the last posts I get the impression that there exist several problems:
1) seeing wifis, but not connecting to it
2) badly decreased wifi range, but if in range connection works
3) different other things

My problem is definetely 2): Putting my Touch with 2.x next to my iPhone with 3.0 shows 6 wifis in the the Touch and 1 (my own strong AP next to me) in the iPhone. Connection works fine as long as I can see the wifi I want to connect to.

After upgrading my 3G to 3.0, wifi became flaky: connections become slow, freeze or drop. Indicated signal strength varies from one dot to full while near the router. I used to receive my home wireless 150 feet away from my house (WAP54G Linksys), now it is 50 feet at best. Auto-connect does sometimes not happen (my local attwifi @ starbucks) or only after a minute. Also noticed that entering BlueTooth discovery mode causes wifi to drop.

I am having enough with this 3.0 wifi issue, spending too much time and effort for a phone I paid so much for.
I am going to send it back to Apple service center today and sell it right after I get a replacement!

I am very upset and disappointed about the current quality of Apple products (software and hardware), they used to be great, which is the only reason to convince myself to pay extra towards all other choices, and I am sure I would try to stay away from it until there are some improvements.

Thought I'd add my issue here, as well...

I'm from Greece. I'm with a 3 weeks old iphone 3G, I updated to 3.0 on release date, although I did not check on that specific day I eventually found out that WiFi didn't work in the sense that it doesn't find any WiFi signal when the switch is turned on and all other devices, laptops, PS3 etc find my wifi router and connect just fine. Also tested the iphone on other Wifi areas as well and at a vodafone shop, no luck...Resets, Restores also were tested but I didn't really expect them to fix the problem...

I had been in a dillema to wait for a fix in 3.1 or to check the device at vodafone for repair...And I decided to check it at vodafone and wait for two weeks for a fixed iphone, as I am suspecting a problematic or burned Wifi chip...
I will immediately update at 3.0 upon getting the new one...If Wifi is lost again I will wait for 3.1 for a fix. If its again not fixed I will send that phone to vodafone again...

Hey, this could go on forever and I could actually end up using only my trusty but crappy Nokia...

Update: Since I posted on July 2, my problem of the wifi constantly dropping has remained fixed by making the router change under LAN Setup, I switched the RIP Direction from None to Both with the RIP Version set to RIP-1. This is on a Netgear router. That's all. I'm still using dual band G and N and left security settings at their highest.

It clearly does not work for all, but does in fact for some of us. I have no doubt this is related to 3.0, because it worked perfectly before, and not a day since until I made the above change. Yes we already know the two of you that will respond with "this is apple's problem, don't touch your router", but you know what, if Apple won't fix it and I can, I will. Using WIFI feels a lot better then sitting around crying waiting for them to do something when they can't even take time to come into a thread on their own forums to acknowledge they see the issue. So give it a try, if it doesn't work, you haven't lost anything, and if it does, congrats.

im having a similar problem, after the 3.0 update i can connect to my home WIFI but when i connect thru it the signal strength will drop way down and even disconnect, even after a reboot the same problem persists. Apple needs to figure out what changes in the 3.0 udate is affecting the WIFI connectivity and create a patch. Before i got the 3.0 update once i connected to my Wifi it stayed connected with no interuptions or drop in strength, if i have to i will restore back to the old software version to correct this issue

Same problemm...
after th upgrade to 3.0 :
*WIFI signal poor*
*Connection Lost in stanby*
*and after some days NO WAY to connect to my Router...*
*The WIFI chip is BURNED?*

I'm afraid that the Iphone 3G WIFI chip are DEAD, the progressive degradetion of WIFI connection, and the final Failure of connection seam an Hardware problem caused from the Firmware 3.0...

I actually noticed, prior to not being able to connect at all on WiFi and prior to 3.0 update, that the phone actually disconnected from WiFi on standby and connected immediately to WiFi upon unlocking it and I noticed similar references on that behavior on this thread, but isn't that supposed to be normal? I mean wouldn't it be best to automatically switch off Wifi on standby to save power? I noticed that the phone was draining the battery faster when Wifi was on...Or is that an indication that the chip wasn't behaving properly, oh man too much speculation....

Dear Friends, SOLUTION FOUND 🙂

I wondered if the Wifi Seeking tool may had a problem, and Tadaa, I wa right.

Purchased and Downloaded "WifiTrak Application". This application finds signal where the Internal Wifi Browser d0oesn't find anymore after 3.0 upgrade.
So basicly I load WifiTrak, Browse network from there and connect.

But to be honest, disconnection still happens. But eventually I can see my Access Point even on the second floor.

my Comment is : The Internal Wifi Browser has the BUG...

This is not a comment, its a statement that insinuates fact, a fact that you can't possibly be certain of.
First of all not all problems seem to be the same...Some have disconnections, others have no signal and others see the WiFi option grayed out.
There could be software problems, hardware problems, or a combination of both...
By checking Apple's KB article, anyone can actually know what he/she has to do by checking at the four step process (I belong to the fourth, although bluetooth was working) Other than that we can only speculate and guess\try workarounds until or if Apple releases some sort of bulletin informing iphone owners officially about the problem and its nature...

Thanks for the advise. Ran into the same problem, too. Did everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. As far as I've researched, there are only 3 ways to fix this: Revert back to 2.2.1 _and previous baseband_, an update from Apple (3.1?), or bite the bullet and buy an new 3GS (that's what this is all about anyway: force-upgrade). Out of topic: Did you know there was an Apple IIGS (2GS)? Now an iPhone 3GS...
