Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Nope, did the same. Wait a few more days and you will run into the same problem again.

Thanks for the advise. Ran into the same problem, too. Did everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. As far as I've researched, there are only 3 ways to fix this: Revert back to 2.2.1 _and previous baseband_, an update from Apple (3.1?), or bite the bullet and buy an new 3GS (that's what this is all about anyway: force-upgrade). Out of topic: Did you know there was an Apple IIGS (2GS)? Now an iPhone 3GS...

I second that. With the Baseband upgrade we're screwed. You cannot go back unless you have a very early bootloader (which I have not).

I just like to say that I have this problem as well. I tried all the suggested problems: restore in iTunes, reset network settings, reset all settings, freezer test, endless setting tricks.. nothing works..
It worked fine after I updated from 3.0, even downloaded a couple of apps after that and no issues.. but then the wireless disconnected frequently and would only be restored after a reboot. Now it won't connect at all! wireless access points from all different brands are not detected! Please Apple fix this quick!

I also forgot to mention:
my wireless problem slowly got worse since the 3.0 update: at first it would disconnect only a few times but this occured more in time and now it won't connect to anything at all.
I'm using an Linksys WAP54G access point with G connection only, and WEP 128bit encryption, but the device also fails to recognise other wireless connections from other accesspoints. I've seen people mention Linksys as their common brand for wireless networking, is it just us Linksys users with this problem? I've seen Netgear users on other forums with problems as well

Having waiting in vain for a couple of weeks for Apple to acknowledge and fix the problem I decided to call 02 / Apple to discuss the problem. 02 passed me over to Apple straight away. The rep from Apple asked me to do another restore, which I did to humour her. Before hanging up I asked "okay, so when this doesn't work what do I do next?" to which she replied "call back". So 20 minutes later I'm back on the phone to Apple telling a different rep what I'd done. The rep then told me they were receiving a lot of calls related to problems with WIFI and 3.0 and that there was an underlying problem with the update - g'way!!

Anyway, he booked me an appointment at my local Apple store for Monday and said they'd swap the phone out for me. I realise this may not be an option for some of you guys but at the least the rep was good enough to admit there was a problem. My recommendation, if you're experiencing this problem and your phone is in warranty call Apple.

A device that fails to recognize a WiFi signal when others in the same area do, clearly has a problem, especially when you try it at other areas as you said. However there were reports of DNS registration and flushing the cache, which have nothing to do with finding a WiFi signal, so there's some confusion because there are different kinds of issues...

I don't understand why people are bringing back their iPhones to the stores, why don't the new iPhones they get have this same issue? From reading that topic about the downgrade to 2.2.1, my guess is that this really is an OS 3.0 issue, because the wifi works fine at 2.2.1! so this can't be a hardware issue, right?

But if this isn't a hardware issue, why do some iPhones have this issue while other iPhones don't? I can't figure this out..

Finally got a solution, of sorts. After my FOURTH replacement iPhone (Apple doesn't acknowledge problem so it stupidly exchanges the phone repeatedly), I realized that the newly-activated replacement came with OS 2.2.1! So I didn't allow it to upgrade to 3.0! WiFi now works great--just like it used to.

Only problem is the new 3.0-requiring apps (including my favorite MLB At Bat) now won't load. So I suffer with less function and loss of paid apps because Apple won't deal with the problem. I used to think Apple did things better...

Bought my 3G in September, WiFi operated perfectly everywhere automatically without any hassle including home where I use Linksys WRT54G router b/g connected to Freebox (service provider in France, provides second b/g router), also 2 pc’s, 2 eeepc’s, HP C6180 printer, IPAQ, and MacBook, all interact with WiFi no problem (absolutely no security since I haven’t seen a cow or chicken connecting to internet here yet). Updated to 3.0 sometime evening June 17. Since 3G functioned pretty good wherever I travelled I didn’t notice lack of WiFi until few days later at home, where I don’t even have telephone reception (outback country of France). WiFi didn’t connect, I continually received message “unable to connect to ... network” even though the phone showed both the Linksys and Freebox networks under “settings/WiFi”, but the checkmark didn’t show up next to the network and there were no addresses showing up when I opened the blue arrow showing DHCP. For several weeks I tried everything :
- updating all software, resyncing
- soft reset (turn off/on with off button and home button)
reset network
try to enter router info manually, as static, but info doesn’t save
- reset all settings
- erase all content and settings
- restore in iTunes multiple times, going back through saved backups, then several times as “new phone” (pain in the butt, 14 pages of apps to reorder, reenter codes and mobileme to resync each time)
- resetting the Linksys to factory default settings and updating the software (actually runs better with the other equipment now!)
- foraging through scores of websites trying to find a solution (and the problem is widespread)
- buying a Time Capsule 500 GB and setting it to b/g (iPhone doesn't work with 802.11n). I returned it.

I have to admit I didn’t try the freezer or oven solution, and I don’t like the idea of “prison” breaking.

None of this helped to get a WiFi address to show up

Apple admits the problem here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559 and suggests doing most of what I did above

So I went to their Step 4, I called Apple Technical Service here in France. The rep walked through the steps with me as outlined in the kb above (I told him I had done it all many times). He said this problem is related to version 3.0, it depends on the configuration of our phone at the time of updating, it is a known problem, we cannot go back to version 2x, version 3.0 was not tested enough under all situations, and HE’LL REPLACE THE PHONE.

In 25 minutes he took all the info he needed (neither of us spoke French as our mother tongue so yes it took 25 minutes). This was Monday evening. Tuesday noon a UPS rep picked up my phone, Thursday morning the same UPS rep delivered a new (read refurbished) iPhone 3G.

VERY IMPORTANT! He said DO NOT update to version 3.0 with the new phone! He said there will be notification when it will be safe to do so.

It’s working perfectly, yes it is again version 2.2.1 but I have WiFi, much more important than having Notes sync with my MacBook or a voice recorder (get iTalk or QuickVoice). Oh, and 7 apps (all free) were updated to 3.0 and they don’t function now. I’ll wait.

So, like someone said about, everyone’s phone should be still under warranty, take advantage of this undeclared recall to get a new unscratched phone, and hope that the new version comes out quickly. Good luck.

I reported in this thread on Jun 24 that I'd fixed my issues by reconfiguring my access point to work in B-only mode. It worked up until yesterday when it crapped out on me again - nearly 3 weeks.

I've tried changing every setting on the router, even hard resetting it and spoofing the wireless MAC so the iPhone thinks it's a different piece of hardware, with no effect. Naturally I tried all the useless suggestions in the knowledgebase article.

I solved it for now by setting up a spare access point, but I don't suppose it will last for long before it all goes wrong again.

I'm going to wait for the 3.1, and if it comprehensively addresses the problem, then all will be forgiven. If not, I'm going to BlendTec the iPhone and buy a Pre or HTC Hero 🙂

Jul 13, 2009 4:28 AM in response to Dan Gibbons

so people who go to stores recieve an iPhone with 2.2.1, that's why this problem is solved for them?

I suppose I'll wait for 3.1 as well, but if that doesn't fix it.. I heard LG is releasing an 21:9 phone this year.. with wifi..... 😉

just kidding of course.. but why won't apple admit this problem if the shops clearly do? If everyone with an iPhone with OS 3 can go to the store and trade it for a brand new iPhone with OS 2.2.1, won't that cost Apple much much more??
