Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

I recall starting to have serious wifi trouble after using remote too. It would be interesting if others had the same cause, although I rather think this is a bigger issue, maybe the remote app just kicked it in while it was already bound to happen

Some people have less serious problems with their wifi than others, so I made a list of all the solutions that might work for you on page 30 of this tread, see if it helps you. Note that those are only temporary fixes untill Apple sorts this thing out
Good luck

I've had no problems with either of the remote apps from Apple. I've had many friends who have had problems who have left their wireless routers on their default configurations until they've bothered to find out which channels are in use in their area, change channels if necessary and check their wireless setup though!

How many people buy wireless routers 'out of the box' and expect them not to conflict with everyone else in their vicinity who have done EXACTLY the same thing AND THEN expect EVERY other wireless device they use not to get a little bit confused sometimes?!!!! NO WONDER some people experience problems and NO WONDER some people never have! <---direct personal experience

I'm just writing to add another uyser with the same problem: wireless not working after the 3.0 upgrade (after 2 or 3 days). I just upgraded to 3.0.1 and still not working. I tried all the solutions posted here and none worked. This morning the phone connected to a wireless network for 2 minutes then lost the signal and didn't see it again. An official answer from Apple should be in order, there are too many of us with the same problem ...

Ok
Firstly, in reply to the person re: the routers and out of the box configs etc.
I wouldn't make so many assumptions about users and their routers as I, like many, many of the people on this forum have spent hours and days messing around with settings, locations etc and the problem has not been solved.

With the sheer amount of users suffering with this problem, regardless of whether we are using out of the box settings or not, it should just work.

I think we all have to now admit that it is not a problem with any of our equipment or our environment is to blame.

It is obviously either a hardware of software defect that cannot be repaired unless Apple do something themselves.

I have already written a letter of complaint due to the lack of any kind of acknowledgement from Apple about this issue.
However, I think that we are doing no harm (in fact benefitting) by reporting every new case in this thread just to reinforce the number of users suffering.

Joe.

Also in response to RestlessFool who seems to think we are all fools with bad configured routers, I have to confess that I think some people here might just have a configuration problem. But it is not what the most of us are experiencing for sure.

Actually the most common channel default configuration for wireless routers 'auto'. This means routers will try to use channels that aren't being used by neighbour routers avoiding conflicts. While this might explain disconnection problems because the router might jump channels while in use, it does not explain the most common problems people are discussing here: no wifi at all or significant decrease in wifi range. And it certainly does not explain why the problems started after 3.0 upgrade. And in my case, as I described before more than once in this huge thread, it was immediately after upgrade. And I can reproduce the problem any time I want by getting closer to the router and stepping back a few steps away from it.

Well I got my replacement phone from retailer on Friday. with 2.2.1 of course.
So now everything's back to normal ! I did not changed any wifi settings in my router or whatever. It's just working as it should...
Without any explanations on what appended to me (just after 3.0 upgrade, I had the 'no wifi' grayed out field) I'll stay with that version.

Positive side effect: my battery lifetime is now normal. Before that, even in standby during the night, the battery was empty in less than 12hrs... maybe because it was looking again and again for wifi signal ?

update :

its been about 4 days since my Wifi completely stopped working, I have tried everything from wiping the memory to restoring.

I even installed 3.1 beta 3, (since my UDID is activated) upgrading my baseband to 05.11.04 to no avail.

I then downgraded to 3.0 and upgraded to 3.0.1 and still nothing.

So I don't know what to do. APPLE any suggestions???

I am starting to think it is a hardware problem.

For those that don't know my problem is my Wifi will not find any networks (.)

It used to find at least one and would fail to connect. But now it finds 0.

I´m suffering with this mysterious issue too - after setting up new iphone 3G to 3.0 OS.

I´ve just found something very interesting. I used great application for navigation named xGPS and click on setup - there is option for wifi transfer which could be usefull if you want to transfer big map files between iphone and pc. It also somehow create automatic device IP adress 127.0.0.1 after you turn on wifi on iphone. Then I tried to ping my iphone from laptop and it´s working correctly now.
After this I tried to connect to my router with default iphone app - i can see the router now, but connection is not working yet. I also tried with wififofum but not working neither.
However - this is the great evidence that wifi chip and network device in iphone is not damaged - just blocked by unknown software issue.

Maybe small step for me, but maybe it can helps to find soulution finally.

Count me and two friends as having this problem... We were talking about how the iPhone 3G's reponse time has been really slow since the upgrade. And we all (separately) thought that our WiFi's were going bad... And if the three of us had problems, we figured there'd be something in the discussions about it...

And wow - 33 pages of messages... It really is maddening that Apple didnt even acknowledge the problems, and the techs pretended that they havent seen this problem before...
