Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

I have the same problem with my iPhone 3G which I got it from last September. After updating to 3.0, everything work okay except for the WIFI where it will not find a 'connection' for me to connect to. Checked my wireless network and everything is okay. I tried restoring the phone, resetting the network, turning off push email, etc... everything that I read from these forums and still doesn't work. Should I call Apple to see about getting it replace or wait for a fix? I like to get it fix fast so I can use Document to Go which is just available for iPhone and I can't use it because of this stupid problem. I guess I will take it up to a nearby Apple store but it's a **** 25 miles drive away... GRRR!!! I do hope to see an reply from Apple soon on this. Maybe an update will fix it without getting it replace.

Thanks.

I've had this problem since updating to 2.2 BUT this problem was only at work. I would do the reset network setting and most of the time it worked but only for a day or so. I was hoping that 3.0 would of taken care of it but it didn't. I just did the reset and as of now I can connect to my office WiFi. I never had this problem at home using my airport express- just at work.

This is very similar issue for me too, I upgraded my wife's and my Iphone's Friday and ever since I have had the following issues

1. hard to make calls, they either don not complete or they drop.
2. Wifi connection does not connect to my Wireless unless I make the connection or it connects to my neighbors instead, even after the connection it does not work, or it is very slow.
3. My VPN connection seems to not remember login info even when it is saved.
4. App store loads really slow. (this could just be a result of all the new iphone 3gS)

I have experienced these issues on both Iphone's. I can say the feature that the 3.0 have brought are good, and I think most of the issues except the WiFi and the VPN are more to do with ATT. So hopefully this will be resolve soon.

no this has nothing to do with AT&T rather than a update bug in the FW 3.0

reason I am saying this is that I am currently in Germany and the same things are happening here to the users - some do have trouble and some don't

I am for my person on the German Vodafone Network and don't have any trouble at all with WiFi or GPS signals - the only thing is that the Edge signal is usually roughly one and a quarter mile of the mark but as soon as I get a 3G signal the position will correct itself dead on - other German VF or T-Mobile users claim the same problems as yours and some don't

All I hear is Apple is so great, whatever..there should be a patch by now? This is ridiculous

Well i got the iphone 3g about three weeks ago, worked pretty good then this stupid update. My phone went to emergency mode, reset all my phone to get it working again, wouldn't load all my apps, did some other reset that the discussion board said in the settings those finally showed up. No wi-fi, greyed out. No bluetooth. Took it to the ATT Store, they did a few things, nada.

Should those of us who can't use our phones for basic features get some kind of discount on our bills or credit towards accessories or itunes downloads?

OK, here's what I ran into. As I previously posted on http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2043123&start=0&tstart=0 , I probably tried every single option that was offered on the forum and elsewhere with no result.
Now here's what I ran into today:
After being tired of all the things I tried without an outcome I decided to do something else.
I opened the iPhone!! Now, Im not telling all you people to go ahead and open your phone but I want to resume on what I did.
Removing the screen I noticed connector 1 (connectors are clearly marked) had came loose. Off-course this might have nothing to do with all these issues but that's the way it was. After attaching it back in place I rebooted with the phone open.
This is were an eventual solution might come in play: I rebooted (even twice) without the SIM card in the phone. After rebooting, no wifi...
I put the phone back together, inserted the SIM card and rebooted again. Guess what? Wifi signal all over the place...
I took a ride in my car scanning the neighborhood and received countless networks, WiFi has been working flawlessly since.
Again, I'm not telling you to take apart your phone, PLEASE DON'T if you don't feel confident to do this, contact a professional if you really want this to happen. The problem solving might have, and probably hasn't, nothing to with me doing so. The connector in my phone might have been a one-off.
It's the booting without SIM that I think did the trick. Trying this will not hurt anyone, nor the phone, I guess.
Just wanted to share this with all you people because these WiFi complaints are like everywhere.
Another problem I had was that the device didn't want to charge anymore nor was it recognized by the computer (bad contact???). This also was resolved after these reboots.
In short, things started working again as they should.
I hope trying this might resolve some issues for some, preferably all, of you.

iPhone 3G, installed 3.0. Numerous problems, which I was able to plow through, except this one. The phone thinks it's on Wifi, but every attempt to use a network app, whether it be Safari, Mail, or third party apps like iReddit, fails.

Did the reset network settings thing, but no fix there. I have 3G off by default since no 3G signal where I am.

Everything was working beautifully on 2.2.1, and my iPod Touch 1G which is still on 2.0 is continuing to work beautifully as well, in particular, it is able to access the network over Wifi.

This is why you don't schedule releases. They had WWDC scheduled, so of course that was the time to release 3.0, right? Wrong. You release software when it's ready.

Exactly! Reminds me of something a chef friend of mine says. People will ask him how long to cook something and he'll say "Cook it until it's done".

I've been an Apple fan for many years, throughout the life of the Macintosh, and this is one of the worst bungles in software updates I've seen.

The second slap in the face is that there's no way for us to gracefully back out of this. Heck even the Time Capsule and Express firmware can be downgraded.

I should take my own advice and never, ever install the .0 version of ANYTHING.

Hmmm my internet problem is even more bizarre...

when i try to use my home wi-fi internet connection in a location where i used to only have 1 or 2 bars, it connects to it and shows 3 bars. although this might not seem like a problem at first, when i try to use an application that uses internet connection (such as ''weather'' or ''mail'' or ',safari''), i have pop-ups warning me that i need to connect my iphone to internet to be able to use them...

and even when i go next to my router (where the wi-fi connection used to be at 3 bars) the same thing happens... I have 3 bars showing up, but no connection...

please help 😟

I new wrinkle in this sad ongoing saga for all of us .....

I spent the past 3 days obsessed with this issue (for clarification's sake: only my WiFI wasn't working properly -- the bluetooth was fine - everything else was fine -- the WiFi signal was bewildering weak, then strong, then weak, then wouldn't connect, then would connect for 20 - 30 minutes .... etc .... etc)

I restored .... I reset all networks ...... I restored again .... I reset again ... I tried all manner of "sequences" in starting the wifi .... stopping the wifi .... forgetting the network ... renewing the lease..... etc ...etc

after taking it the "genuis bar" ... an oxymoron for sure ..... and having them restore it and repartition it .... I took it home .... only after making sure that it worked for a solid 20 mins in the store .... once home, it didn't work .... AGAIN ...

I went back online and looked up information about my router .... suspecting (against my will) this might be the issue -- many of you may know that iPhones are only compatible with B/G WiFi transmissions .... it also looked like WEP PSK2 security might cause problems

folks .... I just solved my WiFi problem for good (several hours later of powering down / up, going to standby mode / off standby mode, running Skype, Bloomberg, walking to different parts of the house etc )

I had to change the setting on my router .... I'm running a Linksys WRT300N at home which is an N compatible router (although it also is backwards compatible with B/ G devices) ..... once I forced to it to transmit ONLY in B/G mode .... the problem was resolved !!!

in fairness, I also updated my firmware, and changed the security from PSK2 to PSK Personal with TKIP ... but none of that solved the issue .... it was only after the B/G mode switch that everything clicked

signal is STRONG .... no wavering ... no funky issues

I SINCERELY hope this helps some other folks out

sincerely

finally satisfied in Boston

UPDATED POST:
I followed the recommendations offered by 999aaa (THANKS A MILLION!!) and set my router to transmit out with "g only" (my Belkin router 3 has options: "n only", "g only", or "g nb") and *_so far problem is solved_*. I also did a reset of my iPhone Network Connections after I changed the router (as recommended by other users: Go to SETTINGS/GENERAL/RESET/RESET NETWORK SETTINGS - after this you'll need to reenter your router password when reconnecting) *_My iPhone is again reconnecting to my WiFi automatically, and speed was not affected._*

_*The question remains* -_ why is this happening with the 3.0 upgrade? I had no problem with my router set to "g nb" and the 2.2.1 OS. Likely a bad 3.0 glitch...

I'm having the same (or similar) issue ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2054002&tstart=0)

It's with a brand-new 3GS, came with 3.0 pre-loaded. I have a WEP 128-bit WiFi network at home, set to "g only".

TWICE since Friday I've found that when I leave my iPhone in the cradle (about 10 feet from Wifi access point), let it go to 'sleep', then come back to it hours later, I'll find that the internet isn't working. Wifi indicator still shows a 'strong' signal, but it can't talk to the internet. I have to toggle 'airplane mode' or switch OFF wifi (and go to 3G) to get to the internet.

It doesn't happen every time the iPhone goes to sleep/locks - only twice in the past few days. So, for people who think they have 'fixed' the problem, it could just be intermittent (and may come back).

My old first-gen iPhone on same network (with OS 2.x) didn't have this problem.

I hope that the rumored update to OS 3.0 will address this issue!

I'm experiencing a similar Wi-Fi problems since upgrading to 3.0.

I also noticed a new problem when I re-start my iPhone in the morning, instead of carrier strength bars at the top left corner it says " Searching...". My wife and I turned on our phones exactly at the same time, same place and she instantly gets bars and I get the " Searching...". To resolve this I put the phone in Airplane mode, then switch Airplane mode off and the bars instantly reappear. During this time I have internet access.
