Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

This is a joke, an update supposidly packed of features we have been waiting for to be released in this state. My iphone 3G's wifi signal is up and down all over the place, always times out or fails on everything i do sitting right next the me router. Its definately a here and there problem, as my ipod touch 2G has no prblems at all with 3.0 on it. For a portable use everywhere device, now i cant use anywhere.

Why cant they open up itunes again so we could downgrade back to good old 2.2.1. Never had any problems on that one.

Get it sorted quickly.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one with 3.0 Wifi issues. I've noticed that my iPhone now takes a while to connect to my router and when it does I only have a 2-1 bar connection. Sometimes when within a foot of my router I'll still have a 2 bar connection instead of the steady 3. I may have to try a restore since some people have said that works, but we'll see, this just may be a 3.0 Wifi issue and we'll soon see a 3.1.

Same problem here with my new 3G S (just upgraded from a 2G) My WiFi connection hangs up if phone goes to sleep or if I play a game. Even when the WiFi icon is showing a good connection I'm not connecting - Safari freezes with the spinning icon going around and around. Any application requiring an internet connection (like AP News or NYTimes) will freeze as well. The only way to reconnect is to turn the iPhone's WiFi off and then turn it back on again. VERY FRUSTRATING!!

I tried the RESETTING NETWORK SETTINGS solution suggested in an earlier post but it didn't work for me.

No matter how many resets or restores I do, my WiFi connection does NOT 'just work'.

Problems happened after the 3.0 update to my iPod Touch 1G. I don't have the time to sit through another LONG firmware restore process in iTunes and chances are I'm locked out of going down to a problem free 2.0.2 firmware.

My problems are the signal closes after a few seconds, making the iPod useless for the functions I enjoyed just two days ago before 3.0 came and stressed me out!

Fix this apple!

Here's what I did :

~ ~ Do these things IN ORDER ! ! ~ ~
shutdown ALL running apps on the puter except iTunes. (repeat, ALL !)
on the iPhone, turn off the sim lock AND the passlock.
re-boot the phone. (turn it off w/switch on top, then back on)
get iTunes up on your 'puter.
plug phone into 'puter with usb, NOT into hub.(use good short cable).
let it sync. (if you don't have auto sync turned on, clik sync)
when thats done, turn sync OFF, and APPLY.. (bottom right on the iPhone Page of iTunes).
disconnect, and THEN unplug iphone.
hold down HOME and off switch on top of iPhone until it DIES COMPLETELY, (after red slide line appears, wait til it DIES).
wait a minute, til it goes dead, then turn it back on.
plug it back into the puter (remember, sync should be OFF).
clik on "Restore", and it will ask you "restore from backup or new phone".
I chose restore from backup, but you can do either.
when it's doen restoring, THEN sync the phone (clik sync bottom right) all your stuff will be back.....

if you are out of range of a cell tower, you will have to go to get some signal to "Activate" the iphone. this is not a problem, it just wants to check with ATT to make sure you have a valid account, and when done, WHOOPEEEE !! you back on the air !

now the next part is just as important:

get the iphone close to a wifi signal, and let it find a signal.
clik "Settings" and then "WIFI" ... make sure the slider is set to "ON".
your network should come up, when it does, tap it... a checkmark should show up.
clik on "More Info" (the lil' blue " > " ).
make sure "DHCP" is blue.
swipe down to "Renew Lease" and clik it, then clik "Renew Lease" again when it pops up.
close that app (press home button).
clik Safari, and load any page....make sure it will go to a couple different pages, so you KNOW you have Internet Service.
clik Home and close the Safari app.
hold down the off switch (on top) until the red "Power Off"slider shows up and release switch, and swipe it OFF (reboot iphone)

your done, this should fix most of the crap...if it doesn't, go to the iPhone store nearest you and throw the SOB in their laps.

this process fixd mine, it now will find the WIFI after sleep, (Bluetooth works fine), and hooks up, and will surf fine..... I don't think it has quite the range it should have, we'll probably have to wait until 3.1 or whatever for that. good luck and thanks to all who posted help on here, as it was thru HERE that I was able to come up with all this.

I tried the whole reset procedure as outlined above and, as I had expected, it didn't do the slightest bit.
iPhone still wouldn't want to pick up networks that didn't have full signal strength.

But I reluctantly purchased WifiFofum, as another user suggested, and it EASILY recognizes all networks where the iphone sees none and lets me surf normally.

Well, now it shouldn't be necessary to purchase third party software to get built in features to work, but until Apple sorts this out, I'll definitely be using the app.

Thought I was the only one having issues with WiFi after the 3.0 update on my iPhone 3G. Had to re-enter my network password multiple times (I have an iMac & Time Capsule). WiFi goes dead when my phone is in standby mode. WiFi signal strength is very low, even in the same room as my router/Time Capsule. WiFi even drops to Edge at random intervals (I rarely have 3G enabled).

Everything was just fine before 3.0 update!

OK - my problem was that I couldn't connect to a WPA Enterprise network I previously used with my iPhone OS 2.x. It would attempt to logon using my username and password, and then simply fail.

sjoerdsoulie posted on page 5 of this thread and noted an article on Roughly Drafted addressing a similar issue:

http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2009/06/19/fix-for-wifi-problems-after-iphone-3-0- upgrade/

The article describes doing a reset of the network settings. This resolved sjoerdsoulie's problem.

So, I did this, which forced my iPhone to logon to my WPS Enterprise as a new user. I was presented with a new certificate to accept. Once I did this, I joined with no problem.

So there may be residual certificate data that either gets corrupted, or maybe certificates must be renewed to work with the new OS.

Of note, if you have set up a VPN profile, you'll need to remake it.

On the whole, this resolved my issue - Apple simply needs to post an advisory in their KBase.

Same as above posters... Shame on you Apple!

I want back my OS 2.2.1 ---> PLEASE!

The bugs are just too numerous to name in a logical fashion (referring to the several other threads from battery drain problems, to laggy keyboard and graphics, etc...)

VERY dissappointing!

I am sure it will be fixed eventually, but dang, c'mon, surely these issues popped up during testing of this new OS ---> were they just ignored, or did someone just say "release it" we will fix it later??? If the latter, then SHAME ON YOU APPLE!! 😟
