Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Of course I did. I am an Apple user for almost two decades and also, because of my job, I have Apple Product Professional status, so beleive me that I know the drill and I have tried every standard troubleshooting procedure - from simple resets to a full restore. No luck.

Something must be wrong with 3.0 as I just can't accept that dozen of iPhones simply act the same after this update. Ok, if my brand new iPhone is faulty, but what with others? Wouldn't it be strange to have massive failure of wireless hardware after this update? I hope it's just a software problem as the iPhone service and replacement in Europe is very slow - and you don't get any replacement phone while you wait.

What to do? To wait for 3.1 or to get all those iPhones back to Vodafon and claim the warranty?

I have the same problem : no wifi and no bluetooth. And what should I do now? Place an order to repair? Or wait? Anybody in Apple kindly help me?

I have the same problem. Wifi to my home network drops when the phone is asleep, and Bluetooth refuses to connect to my car! That makes the phone pretty worthless for me.

Is there a way to back this update out and revert to previous version?

For me, it's apparently not an encryption problem.

After reading the previous posts, I switched my WPA network to a simpler WEP encryption, and it is still not finding the network, so I'm switching back. Turning off encryption wouldn't work either, but it's not like anyone would want to leave their private network open nowadays..

I really hope Apple addresses this issue quickly; I've seen it popping up everywhere - more and more people are starting to complain.

Oh and: Turning off 3G (which I disable by default), connecting to my network and then resetting network settings didn't do anything either.

Tried all the steps. its definitely a software glitch. incredibly poor testing on apple's part, thats for sure.

however, this is what i found finally works for me, without having to reboot the phone every time (sometimes forgetting the network and joining again did not work either). I was working with only one wireless access point configured. I put in a spare router that i had lying around, and configured the phone for both. Now what works for me is i switch to the 2nd (not main router), then switch back to the main. It holds the connection consistently then. (could not browse with the second one, by the way, i wonder why). both are wpa2.

Its not the ideal fix, but as i said, beats rebooting or forgetting and reconfiguring network every time i need to use it. Shutting wifi off and turning on again still does not restore connectivity, but this step does.

I'm having wifi issues with 3.0 too: signal quality is consistently worse, and it drops the connection after transferring small quantities of data. It's faster to just leave wifi off and use 3G.

I've tried resetting the network settings to no avail, and downgraded my router security from WPA2 to WEP, which didn't help. All my other wireless devices work fine.

Disappointed 😟

I noticed another strange issue last night. Connecting to my WPA WiFi is hit or miss. So last night was outside using my Airport Express wirelessly to listen to music on the patio. Everytime I opened safari and used WiFi the music would cut out. When I closed safari on the iphone music would start back up. In the past tons of iphone users would be at the house using the DJ feature on the remote never an issue. Could the new 3.0 software also be causing WiFi interference or causes too many packets to flood the network?

i might be getting close here. The phone was getting assigned a public ip from the router. Used to work perfectly well for 2.2.1, regardless of private or public. Changed the settings so it assigns a private ip now, seems to be working flawlessly. Picking up signals a bit late when waking from locked and sleep mode, but once it connects automatically its working.
They have obviously changed some code that stops wifi working intermittently when faced with a public ip. idiots.

There is NO Apple support in countries like Croatia or Italy where iPhone is sold via mobile-phone companies. All support you can get from mobile-company is "Return it and you'll get a new one in up to 4 weeks".

So, my iPhone experience so far will be like 6 months of use and 3 months of waiting repairs. I consider myself lucky as some of my friends are already on 4th iPhone replacement...

I just want to know - is this software or hardware issue, nothing else.

As we are only users we can't answer that questionm directly, sorry.
My guess is that it is a software issue as it only started with the 3.0 software update. It will most likely be fixed in a small update soon.

I finally got my WIFI and Bluetooth stable. I restored the phone to factory settings (which still include software v3.0), didn't restore from backup.

The good thing is iTunes put all my songs back on and all my apps. The bad thing is I had to re-enter all my logins, and it wiped out my photos.

But, after re-pairing with my car, Bluetooth now connects immediately.

The phone also remembers my home wireless network and connects after unlocking the screen.
