Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Exactly the same problem here.

Before updating, Wifi worked flawlessly; at times even better than my macbook's.
After the updating, my iPhone does not discover my networks anymore. I have made it recognize my home network, however, by getting closer to the router. But since distance has never been a problem, it definitely shouldn't be now.

Also: when it finally HAS recognized the network and I get back to my desk, it gives me full signal strength, yet looses the signal after sleep and doesn't manage to find it again unless I get closer to the router.
Considering that the advantage of wireless is not only to not have wires, but also to be able to move around freely, this bug really kills Wifi.
It is definitely impairing me in my use, since 3G is not available in this region and I do not have unlimited rates.

I'm guessing that the problem, in this case, is that the signal strength that is needed to connect to a network is much greater than it used to be; and I am seriously hoping that it is, in fact, a bug and will be fixed soon. It is getting me rather annoyed..

Well, it's started to become a bit more sporadic for me now. It managed to connect via my WiFi router for about 15 mins this morning, and then was unable to download any data over the connection again.

Have now tried a restore, but to no avail. I'm wondering if there might be different versions of the WiFi chip in the various batches of the iPhone 3G - apologies if this sounds like a dumb suggestion, but it might be a driver problem within OS 3.0 itself.

Any which way, Apple needs to fix this soon - looks like a considerable number of people are having data transfer problems. Am really wishing there was an easy way to downgrade to 2.2.1...

My iPhone 3G's wifi has been working fine since the update, however my sister's iPhone has this strange WiFi problem. WiFi logo comes up on the phone after restart, however when I start using the connection (e.g Safari), iPhone switches to GPRS/EDGE/3G.

Restored her phone, didn't help, so tried restoring in DFU mode, didn't help. Checked the advanced settings in under the network I was trying to connect to and noticed that her iPhone wasn't being assigned an IP address, with all the fields either coming up blank or the iPhone being assigned a private IP. So went into my router's settings (Netgear DG834GT) and added the phone to the address reservation list, forcing the router to assign a the same IP to a designated MAC address (i.e my sister's iPhone). Seems to be working fine now, restarted the phone a few times and took it in and out of sleep a few times just to make sure. It's been an hour and the WiFi connection's been as stable as it was before the 3.0 update. Hope this helps.

Oh, forgot to mention:

I am connected to my router using WPA

This thing is spreading like a plague - today two more of my friends called me and said: "I have upgraded to 3.0 and now my wireless is not working..."

So, I thought - it must me some major software bug as there are too many people reporting this but here is no info from Apple on this issue. Official support in Europe is very limited and all they can say is: "Claim the warranty and you'll probably get a new unit in up to 4 weeks." I don't want to wait another 4 weeks after I had my iPhone replaced yesterday beacuse of a dead mic problem.

I was more than upset this afternoon and in one irrational moment of frustration I knocked my brand new iPhone into my desktop table - and guess what? Wireless started working again! It worked for about 15 mins and then died again. I knocked it again with even more force and it worked again! This time it worked for over eight hours without problems. Now it's dead again. So, it seems that it can't be just a software problem - or this 21st century gadgets have A.I. auto-repair system correlated to the emotional state of a user? 🙂

Here is what my service provided suggested which seems to have helped. Go to settings/general/network/disable 3G then select the wi-fi you want to use and then go back to general/settings scroll to the bottom and hit reset, then reset network settings and then it should hold on to the wi-fi you have selected..

Hope that works for you,
