Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

I've think I've got mine working reliably on a Linksys WRT54GS by changing the router to 802.11b only mode (channel 10 also, though I don't think that matters).

This isn't an ideal solution because I still can't use G networks away from home, and everything else that has to use that router is crippled back to 11mbps.

Please report back in this thread if this works for you or not.

Apple, where are you? Would it be so hard to acknowledge you're aware of the problem and are working on a fix (or not)?

I just thought I'd post one of those semi-useless "works for me" posts, but... I've been using 3.0 for some time now with my iPhone 3G, on a wide variety of wireless routers (including a Linksys WRT54GS at home, secured, a WRT54GL at home, open, and a bunch of nice high-end Cisco models at the office) and have NOT seen this issue at all. The phone has gone to sleep and woken up multiple times, played games, and whatnot, all without having any 802.11 issues.

So... It certainly isn't everyone.

spoke to apple support. they're conscious that there are a growing number of reports on this issue. the guy on the phone couldn't comment on how they will deal with it but my call was not the first today...
i will try a full restore tonight. if the sovles it, then it was a software load issue.
if not, the assumption is hardware and he said i would need a replacement phone.
we'll see.

I already did the full restore several times and it did not help. I've called the apple support many times. First they told me, they couldn't see a context to the update. My final call today was absolutly unsatisfying, they acknoleged the context no wifi and update, but they could not tell me how to handle this problem.
They know about it, but there is no announcement on the appleside.
This is definitely not a customer care!

I am having a very similar problem on my iPhone 2G, which I have been using as an "ipod touch" after having upgraded to the 3g. I applied the 3.0 update, and since, the wifi was initially sporadic, and now I can't get it to recognize any networks, even cm's from the router.

I have done everything, including full restores, resets, wipes, etc. Nothing has brought it back. I was at the apple store, and there was a tremendously long line for the 3gs release, so one of the "concierges" took a look for me. She said that it was a hardware issue and since the phone was now out of warranty, I was "out of luck." Not sure how reliable she was . . .

Haven't been able to find any lasting solutions. Any suggestions appreciated.

Same problem here with iPhone 3G 3.0 and Time Capsule with 7.4.2. Wifi goes on and off for no good reason. I also have an airport express here (only for audio, not wds) and trying to control it with the Remote app is completely useless. Web browsing, mail checking ditto. My Macs have no wifi problems.

Between this and all the bluetooth problems in 10.5.7 methinks Apple needs to improve their quality control. A lot.
