Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Like others, the restore did nothing. Apple say it's a hardware issue. This sounds nuts to me.
My new 3gs and old 3g both on 3.0 do not work with wifi.
Old 3g used to work fine with wifi so it must be software based.
Apple seem worryingly quiet.
I think others are right when they say 3.0 is a poor release.
This is something pretty easy to test....
Only anomaly I've seen is that in the apple store my phone connected to wifi well.
Go figure....any ideas?

There appears to be a definite bug in the iPhone 3.0 software as far as WiFi goes.

Upgraded to 3.0 when it came out on my iPhone 3G. No problems, except that WiFi seemed a bit wonky with an AirPort Extreme (802.11g) Router. Since in my house, iPhone software 2.2.1 was a bit wonky with WiFi, I didn't pay much attention or think much of it.

So I upgraded Wifey's iPhone 3G. After a couple of days, both of us have noticed the phone cycling between a strong WiFi signal, a weaker WiFi signal, and AT & T 3G service. FWIW, we also are seeing a bit of pulsing between Edge and 3G service as we drive around town.

I'm inclined to think there's some sort of software bug here.

After installing 3.0 my iPhone went haywire - ALL wifi networks stopped working - settings would tell me I was connected to my home network but it stayed stuck on 3G. Another bug is that I've not been able to sync at all to itunes which helpfully decides to crash when I connect the phone to it. Great.

After searching the forums at theiphoneblog I found a solution to my wifi problem:

If you go to settings>general>reset>reset network settings your iphone will reset. Once it's loaded up and started again, connect to your network as before through settings and hopefully it'll work as before. It worked for me - good luck!

Now I've just got to get it working with itunes!

Greetings,

No problems here with WiFi with the 3G or 3Gs, at home, on my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station "N", network, nor at work with the Aruba network.

It works perfectly at the 3 different Starbucks I frequent, and a couple of other locations - I don't know what any of them are running for a network though.

I didn't have any issues with any of the iPhones, and WiFi connectivity, with any version of the software, so far.

When people ask me about network issues, I always advise that they reset their network connections, on the iPhone, and that usually does the trick for them.

Good Luck - Cheers,
M.

I give up! Tomorrow I'll drive to Italy and return a bunch of dead iPhones to Vodafon. 😟

If it was a software problem, I am sure Apple would address it by now, so it must be a defective hardware.

The only puzzle is how so many iPhones died just after this 3.0 update? Could software trigger hardware failure? No likely I'd say, but maybe not entirely impossible?

Is there any tip how to speed up replacement process? I don't enjoy 4 more weeks to wait for a replacement after I have already been through all that... that would be more than 8 weeks without my iPhone so far...

Pretty sure that I have resolved it temporarily for now ... what seems to be happening is that my iphone doesn't get a DHCP address properly from my Netgear router. Therefore I have configured a static address on the iPhone and configured a reserved address on the router. That does it for the time being but this is not a satisfactory long-term solution. There is obviously something wrong with the way that the iphone 3.0 software requests a DHCP address.

2 days after iPhone 3.0 update WiFi stopped working (does not detect any WiFi spot). Before (OS 2.2.1) I used it regularly at home and at work.
What I have already done trying to solve the problem:
- Push mail OFF
- Bluetoth OFF
- Restored to original settings through iTunes
- Restored from my backup

Nothing helped yet. I wonder if downgrade to 2.2.1 is possible?

This is my first BIG DISAPPOINTMENT with Apple products. I only hope that Apple support people read this and work hard to give us the update to OS 3.0 very soon.

I'm not sure but I might have the same problem - also it's a little stranger...

I got a iPhone 3G I've updated with OS3.0. No Problems there.

When 3GS came out I got one too. When connecting it to itunes with the simcard of my old iphone iTunes asked me if I would like to restore it from a found backup. Did a little google searching and found it should be safe so I did it...

Everything went fine also I had to re-enter all kind of passwords (wifi, mail, etc) - but I actually like that as a security feature.

Sorry for talking so much but I'd like to give you the backround infos...
So.. The Problem I got is...
Both iPhones side by side in the same room. Both connected to the same router. Both showing network connection icon. Surfing the web SEEMS to be equally fast on both devices BUT when I opening a video on a free video site:
The 3G starts to play it pretty fast - but the 3GS opens QuickTime - whirls and whirls and then it opens a msgbox telling me that the video could not be played !

What is that ? To me it almost seems that the 3GS is not actually using the wifi-connection also showing the icon ?
