Battery goes down incredibly fast after 3.0 update?

Hi there,

Has anyone else noticed that their battery indicator seems to be going down at a rate of knots after the OS3 update? I took mine off charge full this morning at 0730. It's now 0950, I've not used the phone much at all and it is below half way already!!

As an iPhone owner since launch day on the 2g and subsequently 3g launch day, I was upset with the very poor battery life I was getting on my 3g compared to the first gen. Of course, when I saw the 3GS boasted modest battery life gains I knew it would be another launch day purchase for me.

But the battery life is TERRIBLE. For example, I'm off work today--so I unplug my 3GS from it's wall charger around 10am and use it lightly throughout the afternoon on my WiFi network only. By lightly, I mean checking my Gmail, and Exchange mail (with it set to Manual and NOT push) occasionally browse the app store, etc. But I've played no games and made very few phone calls. Well by 2:45pm, I was down ato 18% battery life!! Err...this seem right? I'm using the same settings I had on my 3G and it's actually worse. I have push enabled ONLY for my MobileMe contacts/calendars, and have my Gmail set to automatically check every 1 hour. Location services is on, but I haven't used any and bluetooth is off.

Mine too. put your iphone near a speaker and try to check high static levels not prevalent before the upgrade. whats worst is the health hazard it will pose. my iphone became more of a problem than a solution. Reported it and expect an answer. in the meantime its mostly on airplane mode since i got tons of datas in it. phone functionality is a no no.

If you truly believe there is a health hazard you should never, ever use or even carry a cell phone. If cell phones are a health risk we have absolutely no idea what a "safe" level of exposure is.

From France - It's seem to be ok for me now.

I have contacted by mail by Apple to install a application Battery to log it's activity.
After load a profile battery, in settings , my iphone always up after 2 day's of use vs 8hr after update 3.0 .
I don't know what this application do, but it's certainly ok for me now.

I have to send us my log file to analyse it.

I come back tomorrow here to see the resultat and to feedback it.

Sorry for my english

I find the battery behaviour inconsistent:

With similar usage during the day I get very different battery levels each night, from around 70% to 20%. Again with no change in the settings or very different usage.

One thing I note is that the USAGE information in general settings keeps getting up with I actually not using the phone. And the only thing that it's supposed to do is fetching mail every hour from 2 accounts, no push.

With this usage my level with OS2 was around 80-90% each night!!!

OS3 stinks!!!! And the problem is in the radio firmware I guess.

I have two IPhone 3G. One is working perfectly well after upgrade to 3.0 but the other, battery strength dropped really fast after the upgrade. Both settings is the same.

I send the faulty one to the Apple store. They did a one to one exchange for me, giving me the 2.2 one.. everything is fine... Upgrade to 3.0...battery failed again..

I dont think is anything to do with the settings. Is a hardware issue. Send yours back and ask Apple to give you an answer to it. They are coming out with a patch that spoilt the handset.

today after switching push to fetch i acheived
somewhat longer battery life, but nothing like pre os3
phone gets bogged down and lags on every level

ready to do a restore

my post yesterday:

same issue for me

charges from wall only, not on usb
in 2 hours it says 10% left, then it gets REALLY HOT
and all kinds of weirdness begins
got a new warning; : iphone is too hot to use, please wait
i used to go as much as 2.5/3 days without charging

the following post had ideas regarding apps and push:
Battery Won't Charge after OS3 Upgrade for Exchange Email User - Solution?

SO... apple?
are you gonna replace all of our previously perfectly operating devices
when the battery dies from your crappy new OS?

ive never had issues like this and its killing my productivity

please
fix it now

Battery life since updating to 3.0 is horrible. I can't go a full day without charging. I have wifi=on, 3g=on, edge=on, bluetooth=off, push=off, fetch=hourly, and my usage is just like with my 2.2. I can actually watch it drop as I am in mail or safari. It's crazy how fast it drops.

BUT, turn on airplane mode and viola! Battery stays where it's at and only drops just a little bit even when playing games and such. So I have a feeling it is the data and 3g. Something just isnt right with the new OS. I have restored 3 times with no luck and each time I set up as a new iphone and DID NOT use a back up.

The only thing I havent tried yet is Resetting the iPhones settings in the settings app and then a full restore. Some say that has helped but I really don't think so. Apple needs a fix to this and fast!

Apple is NOT going to fix this fast; they will probably fix it, but that will take weeks or months, as ANY update must be very thoroughly tested. If the only thing you haven't tried is resetting and a restore, this means you have done all of the following (see previous messages in this thread for how to do it).

1. Recalibrated the battery gauge.

2. Reset Network Settings.

3. Deleted your push email accounts, rebooted, and added them back, then let the phone run for a day before checking battery life again.

4. Turned off Push (usually fixes the symptom, but not the problem).

5. Closed all open Safari pages.

6. Temporarily removed all 3rd party apps, then add them back a few at a time.

There are some other suggestions in this thread also and other threads; reading them all may prove enlightening.

Keep in mind that this is not a widespread problem. A few of us have experienced it, and most of us who have seen it have fixed it ourselves, without waiting for Apple. Yes, there's a bug somewhere, but it doesn't affect that many users. But the ones it does affect are (rightly) very vocal, so the problem seems more widespread than it is.

Same problems experienced here. 16 gb 3G. Very quick battery drain after 3.0 upgrade.

SOLUTION: Reset network settings and deleted Google App. Also, to note, I have push off for mail (as well as before the upgrade too)

RESULTS: So far, a LOT better. Back to usual it appears. Will test today for confirmation.

NOTES/RATIONALE: Definitely no techie here, but someone had posted resetting network settings to clear old cache surmising it was a problem some way (so figured to give it a try), and also that Google App wasn't fully compatible with 3.0 and this results in battery drain. They also had mentioned other 3rd party apps as potential culprits, but I thought I'd start with Google app first.

Battery goes down incredibly fast after 3.0 update?
