Invalid Security Code - frustration !

Hello to you all Apple/Mac lovers 🙂,

I did see that someone had already posted about this earlier, only the topic was marked as solved so I'm making a new one.

Here's a little heads up for anyone who doesn't about this 😉 : when trying to add a credit card to the payment info on my iTunes store account, it says that I have to enter a valid security code - but the code I entered is already fully valid ! However many times I try I can't get it to work. Any clues, ideas, help ? Thanks a lot 🙂 !

Well it seems to be quite a big problem as so many people have it. Do keep all of those concerned up to date with what they answer to your e-mail. It's time for me to go to bed but tomorrow I'll try to remember to do the same, just so Apple starts to realize something is definitely wrong. I recommend we all do, so at least things start shaking and moving. And did you get anything from those phone calls you mentioned ?

Now here's something - I received this e-mail saying a response had been posted but it doesn't appear on the thread here ... anyways the content of the message was in the e-mail, here it is :

--------------------------------------------------------------
I have same problem. Spent months investigating.

First iTunes support forward you to your bank. If you spend enough time on the phone you will find out that iTunes is trying to verify the card by charging 1 cent.
But iTunes charge the card with incorrect security code.
Turns out that iTunes simply does not support DEBIT cards! (So if you have a Visa CREDIT you won't have such a problem.)

iTunes store carries the VISA logo and it does not state ANYWHERE that it's limited to CREDIT cards only.
Some people tried to complain to Visa, because there's a certainly misleading look on Apple's side : they simply can't display the Visa logo in their store if they dont' accept ALL Visa cards.

Another way to go is keep contacting iTunes support.
THEY CAN MAKE YOUR CARD WORK!
The story is- I had a Visa debit card and tried to enter it into iTunes store. I encountered the same problem you all do. Then few months later, in mid-2008, my Visa card suddenly works !
A few months later the card expired and had to be replaced. Same card number, different expiry date. IT DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE !
I have been trying to make it work for a year now, still no success.

Your Visa debit card may work with iTunes if you convince support to "make it work". Of course they will tell you that they can't "force it".

Keep contacting support and write to fair trading commission in your country.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Ain't that crazy ? By the way can someone remind me what is the difference between credit and debit - which one subtracts the money from your account at the very moment you pay with it, and which one waits till the end of the month ?
It seems all that's left to do is to annoy iTunes support until they make our cards work ...
One other thing that seems to affect the "workingness" of this is changing card ... which I am luckily about to do because the one I have has a crack. The new one will be available next Friday and we'll be able to see wether it works or not and make conclusions from there. The bank did tell me one thing though : the only on this card that will change is, you guessed it, the security code, the very one that's been bothering us all along. The rest will remain identical. We'll see !

*These are the messages i got from apple.*

+Dear ***,+

+I understand that you have been receiving an error message when attempting to enter a valid security code. I realize how much of an inconvenience this can be. My name is **** and I will be more than happy to assist you with this issue until it can be resolved completely to your satisfaction.+

+Many customers have resolved this issue by temporarily removing their credit card information from their account. Here are the steps:+

+1) Visit the Apple Store online:+

store.apple.com/ca

+2) Click Account in the upper-right corner, then click "Change account information" and sign in using the same Apple ID and password you use for the iTunes Store.+

+3) You should see your account-profile page. Under Method of Payment, remove all of the characters from the Card Number field. Do not change the expiration date or credit card type.+

+4) If you haven't already, select where you primarily use your purchases from the pop-up menu near the bottom of the page.+

+5) Click Continue. If you are asked to enter any other information, be sure to click Continue after making the updates so that your changes will be saved.+

+6) Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes. It can be downloaded free of charge:+

+Note: Installing the latest version of iTunes will not affect your library or any items in your account that you haven't downloaded.+

+7) Click this link to open iTunes and access the Apple Account Information page:+

+8) Sign in to the iTunes Store using your account name and password.+

+9) On the Apple Account Information page, click the Edit Payment Information button.+

+10) Enter your payment information and click Done to save your changes.+

+To ensure your account is functioning, try downloading a free item from the iTunes Store. To do this, navigate to the iTunes Store main page by clicking the Home icon near the upper-left corner of the window. Scroll down and click the "FREE ON iTunes" link near the bottom of the main page, then select an item to download.+

+Should you continue to experience difficulty after following these steps, or if you encounter an error message when removing your credit card information, please reply to this email and provide the following information:+

+- Your permission to reset the password+

+- The billing address listed on the account+

+- The name and artist of the selection you are unable to purchase or download (if applicable)+

+Upon receiving your response, the iTunes Store will verify your billing address, reset your password, and test your account. You will then receive an email with your new password and further instructions. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Have a great weekend!+

+Take care.+

Sincerely,

****
+iTunes Store Customer Support+

*As well as:*

+Dear ***,+

+I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been able to make purchases on the iTunes Store with your credit card. I know this is frustrating, and I will try to provide as much information as I can to help you resolve it.+

+The iTunes Store has been unable to verify an authorization from your credit card company. There are several possible reasons for this:+

+- Your credit card company's servers may have been busy. Trying again later may resolve the issue.+

+- Your card may not have been activated yet. If so, you will need to activate it.+

+- You may need to call your credit card company before the authorization is approved.+

+- You may need to ensure that you correctly located the credit card's security code. To see instructions for locating the security code, choose View My Account from the iTunes Store menu, sign in to your account, click Edit Payment Information, and then click the "What is this?" link next to the Security Code field.+

+- Your billing name or address does not match the address listed on your credit card statement. Any discrepancy in punctuation, abbreviation, or capitalization can cause errors, which might prevent you from purchasing from the iTunes Store. If you moved, or if your zip code changed recently, ask your credit card company to make sure its records are up to date and match exactly what you are entering as your billing information.+

+Please follow these steps to confirm or update your account information:+

+1) Go to Apple's My Info page: http://myinfo.apple.com+

+2) Choose your country and preferred language from the pop-up menus.+

+3) Enter your iTunes Store account name and password and then click Log In (or Continue).+

+4) At the My Info Welcome page, click Address Book on the left. Confirm or edit your information.+

+5) Click Phone Numbers on the left. Make sure the area codes and phone numbers are entered correctly in their respective fields.+

+6) Click Save Changes.+

+Once your information is updated, try placing an order on the iTunes Store again. If the iTunes Store still cannot obtain an authorization for your card, it means that your billing information is still incorrect, either with your credit card company or with its verification system, which may be handled by another company.+

+Fortunately, you may be able to make iTunes Store purchases with another payment method. For example, if PayPal accepts your credit card, you can use your PayPal account to buy from the iTunes Store. If you need more information about using PayPal on the iTunes Store, please let me know.+

+Another option is to purchase iTunes Gift Cards and redeem them into your account. iTunes Gift Cards are available at many retailers, such as book stores, grocery stores, electronics stores, drug stores, and Apple Store retail locations.+

+Your credit card may work on the Apple Store online (the Apple Store and the iTunes Store use different verification systems). If it does, you can buy iTunes Gift Cards and receive them by postal mail. Alternatively, you can buy Email Gift Certificates and receive them immediately via email. The Apple Store online is located here:+

store.apple.com/ca

+I hope this information is helpful. Thank you for your interest; I am pleased that you want to be an iTunes Store customer.+

None of it has worked for me..

Jun 21, 2009 7:31 AM in response to SuperSelrak

Well neither worked for me either ... but getting e-mail iTunes gift cards using the Apple Store, which might accept our cards according to that guy, seems to be a perfect way to go, I could definitely live with that. Only thing - I can't find where to buy e-mail iTunes gift cards, I only found the hard ones on the store. Anyone know how/where to get those ?

Jun 21, 2009 7:39 AM in response to SuperSelrak

Never mind people the guy who proposed that idea is either 1. a moron 2. stupid 3. a faker. iTunes e-mail gift certificates (and not cards) are only available ... through iTunes. Which would get us in an infinite loop were we not humans. So that option is out of the way. Let's keep the research going and keep writing to Apple until they change things.

Well guys I got it to work thanks to the customer support who wrote back pretty quickly. They told me that my account had been created in America and so I couldn't use my cad which I had gotten in France. So to change country you need to get rid of the current money you have on your account. I only had a dollar left so they erased it and I changed country, entered my payment info and now it works. If any of you went through the same kind of stuff - creating an accont in one country and getting your card in another - then that's the way to get thugs working. So thanks to you all and make a new thread if you want to keep searching.
