1st Gen iPod Touch screen jumps between Accessory Connected and Playlist screen if Shuffle is activated before connecting to the built-in AUX/USB connector. This is after updating to Firmware 3.0. All previous firmware supported this functionality in my car.

I don't have the same problem, but I do have issues in my Honda Fit with factory iPod integration. My 2G Touch used to work just fine, but with 3.0 it will play but I cannot select a Playlist, Artist, or Album from the stereo like I used to. I'll try turning Shuffle off before connecting to see if that changes anything.
Thanks for your note, you confirmed that I'm not going mad!
I have a BMW 128 and after upgrading to 3.0 my IPD 1st gen flashes back and forth from "accessory already connected" to the music menu but won't play anything.
After reading your comment I turned shuffle off, but nothing changed.
I think the Mini and BMW interfaces are similar so I hope to watch this thread for some help.

I have a BMW 750 with the factory ipod adapter. I am having the same problem. I can play a song only when it is alphabetical song order. When I try to select by artist or album, it just hangs on the menu screen. Is there anyway to downgrade the OS?
I tried to downgrade and all I got was error (20). I tried restoring (holding the Shift key down) and selected my prior 2.2.1 OS and got the error, then I went as far as moving the 3.0 .ipsw file to a different folder and still got the error when I restored.
Unless there is some other way to go back to OS 2.x, it looks like we're stuck with 3.0 and stuck with busted iPod integration in our cars. Wonderful, nice going Apple.

try putting your touch into DFU mode, then restoring:
1. First, Open up iTunes, plug in your iPod Touch/iPhone
2. Hold down the Home button and the Power button simutaneously, until the screen goes black and the device turns off. (past the red slider/slide to power off screen
3. Now let go of the Power button, but continue to hold the Home button. Your iPod Touch should have turned off and the screen should not be on.
4. After around ~10-20 seconds, you will hear a noise (beep/ding) from your CPU as if it had just recognized a new hardware device, now iTunes should recognize it in DFU mode.
5. After iTunes recognizes the iPod Touch, let go of the Home button otherwise it will go into recovery mode and you will have to do the entire DFU process over again.
6. You will know when you have put your iPod Touch/iPhone correctly into DFU mode when the display is blank and that you do not have anything on your device.
And you are done, now you can install any iPod Touch firmware on to your device via the iTunes SHIFT recovery method.
good luck!

I don't have the same problem, but a similar one with the iPod integration in my Toyota Yaris. Before the 3.0 update it worked fine with my 2nd Generation iPod Touch able to be controlled by the car stereo and play through the dock connector. After the 3.0 update it still charges, but does not play or show up as a connected accessory.
I have two different aftermarket integration kits in my cars: an old Dension iceLink Plus (uses CD changer buttons to control iPod) and a new Peripheral Electronics iSimple PXAMG (uses XM radio buttons to control iPod). Both exhibit similar problems to that described by other posters after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.0. For the iSimple, the Navigation head unit display switches rapidly between "iPod Connected" and "iPod Not Connected" messages, and no music plays even though the Touch shows "Accessory Connected." It charges but that's about it. It won't play through the head unit even if I start a song playing then connect it to the dock connector cable. The iceLink also results in "Accessory Connected" on the Touch, but no music will play at all. I also have found that after disconnecting the dock connector cable, music still will not play through the headphone jack or built-in speaker, and the volume buttons on the side of the Touch do nothing, until I reboot it. Then it works normally again. Is anyone else experiencing similar things with an iSimple or iceLink?
I'm having the same issue with 1st gen 32GB iPod touch, OS 3.0, and a Mini Cooper Clubman. It eventually can be convinced to connect and play, usually by hitting the home button and relaunching iTunes repeatedly, but even then it will only play 1 song: either letting it play through to a second song or skipping to another track will cause it to crap out ("disconnected"). This iPod has worked with this car for over a year now; timing-wise, the installation of OS 3.0 seems correlated with this recent failure.
This is quite frustrating; hopefully there will be a fix from Apple on this -- can't see how it's Mini/BMW's fault, assuming, that is, that they followed Apple's integration specs (a big if).

Thanks for the detailed reply. I finally mustered up the courage to try this last night and it worked! I was able to get 2.2.1 back onto my Touch, and it now works with my Honda (and smart playlists Live Update again).
The only step I'd add (if others try this) is when you Shift-Restore your Touch, you have to navigate to the folder on your computer that contains the firmware (.ipsw) file. On a Windows XP machine that would be:
C:\Documents and Settings\(account name)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
The 2.2.1 firmware file is "iPod2,1 2.2.1_5H11aRestore.ipsw". Not sure how to find this on a Mac though.
Also, when you do restore to 2.2.1, you might want to play it safe and restore it as a new iPod rather than re-load your last backup.

I tried going back to 2.2.1 and it worked great on my touch as well. Highly recommended until Apple does another release which will hopefully fix these issues.
I have a 2006 Mini Cooper with the ipod adapter, and mine seems to be working fine since 3.0.
I have had trouble previously when I had a password enabled for the autolock. (I was trying to get my kids to stop playing with my iPod), but as soon as I removed the passcode from the ipod touch, it worked fine again. In my case, I don't really need to lock it, so no problem, but it could be an issue for those of you that carry sensitive work documents...

My 1st Gen iPod touch refuses to restore, even under DFU mode; all I get is an error (1600).
Lovely.
