HI,

There are no Mac viruses in the wild. And no, you cannot get a virus from using Flash.

It's more likely that your Flash software isn't up to date. Go here and download and install Adobe Flash Player here. http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

As with any software installation, run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions BEFORE and AFTER the installation. Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Latest edition of Macuser has article about Jahlav-C Trojan and Tored worm...both can infect macs.

Now you've done it 🙂 I can hear the herd coming... Here's a different interpretation to that old Sophos generated scare that's been floated around the internet by the anti-virus companies many times:

There are two or three trojan horse programs/worms/whatever that are currently loose in the world. If you download a file, and launch it, and give it your administrator's password so that it can install, then you can possibly find one of these rare files and screw up something in your machine. Now if you could get a virus from a movie, it would be a virus that by definition would install itself and be able to bypass your OS's security features.

Even the latest version of Safari and FireFox can not protect you if you type in your credit card number on a fake site (a much bigger problem than a Mac Virus). If you download a program from a torrent or other P2P sharing system, you can get a program that says it does one thing, while it actually does another. That's not a virus either.

There are more systems trashed everyday by legitimate poorly written utilities or haxie programs than have ever been damaged by all of the Mac trojans put together.

What's really funny is that I see these same "Mac Virus Discovered" claims on the different Mac news sites every month and they are always the same sources and files. It must be ratings week or something for the advertisers.

It's perfectly possible to write your page code to leave off a play bar for QuickTime Player, I've done it myself for aesthetic reasons on a couple of little movies I've put up on my own web site. People can find this annoying, or even alarming since they can't tell what's happening until the movie starts to play all on its own, and they can't change the volume, replay, nor anything else, so it's not a good idea generally. The nature of the play bar for Flash movies depends on how the Flash container is built. You don't have to include a play bar if you don't want to. I have made a couple of VERY simple little Flash goodies that "just run" no play bar necessary or included. This has nothing to do with malware, just a design decision made by the web master.
