iPhone 3G S has yellowish tint

I just got my iPhone 3G S today and noticed that it has a distinctly yellowish tint to the screen. Doesn't matter what app I am using, and I've tried adjusting the brightness with no success.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Hi bcalvanese:

What Spurt is saying about the screenshots boils down to this:

The iPhone does not know what screen it has. It just outputs a signal. The signal it outputs should be the same for each phone, which is why your two shots look identical. However if the screen itself is defective, this will not be represented in the photos.

For example if I take a hammer and hammer the screen until the whole thing has cracks all over, and do what you did to take a shot, I would end up with the same picture as you, not one with cracks all over it. Why? Because the phone dosent know the screen is cracked, it still outputs the same signal.

In order for you to tell what defects the screen itself has, you have to take a picture of it with a seperate digital camera.

Hope that helps.

I also had a pretty severe yellow tint to my screen as well as dim washed out colors. Putting my 3GS next to my 3G was night and day! After making an appointment with at the Apple store, I had some time to kill and compared my 3GS to the display models and again the difference was night and day. The display were much whiter and the colors more vivid. They gladly replaced my phone and I'm much happier, however I still think my 3G screen showed better with more contrast and deeper blacks. There is no doubt that it is a luck of the draw proposition regarding the screen and what you end up with. I'm really disappointed that Apple still hasn't resolved the QC issues with the screens as they are truly the heart of this device.

I have both previous iPhone models (2G & 3G) bought on the first day when they came out. Both units have gorgeous screens (the white is white not yellowish and the blacks are deep and dark not washed out). When the 3G came out I had to go thru about 5 phones to find one that had a good screen. All this "warmer" color is B.S. and do not let anyone sell you on it if you don't like it. For me is ugly, is not cool, is like a dentist that did a bad whitening job trying to tell you that yellow teeth are "easier on the eyes".
This past Saturday & Sunday I went to three Apple stores trying to determine if there is any correlation between the serial numbers because I went thru three new 32GB 3GS phones and all had the yellowish screens, however some units on the display had beautiful bright white screens (I tried to buy the smaller 16GB on display just for the good screen, but they would not sell it). At one place the store manager tried to convince me that there is nothing wrong with the phone and when I compared mine with the ones on the display he said that those were a special built. Then I asked him to show me his phone and his also had a bright white screen. I said that if he thinks they are all the same, I will buy him a brand new one, unopened from the store and trade it for his. He did not want to do it, of course. The real issue is that the yellowish screens have poorer contrast, color saturation and seem washed out when compared with the bright white ones like I have and also some on the store display (two stores had only 1 or 2 whither screens vs. 10+ phones that were yellowish). They were made on weeks 23, 24 and 25 and could find any correlation between the serial numbers and screen color (it may be but I could not see any pattern). The only option we have right now is to keep trying until you find one you like, go to the store, have them open it, if you don't like it don't take it and go back when they get more shipments.
At least three more people were in the store getting their phones exchanged because of the yellow screen.
Perhaps somebody at Apple will find a way to get it right as the number of returns and will grow and will start to become more costly than them doing nothing.
Do not accept the yellow teeth if you paid for white ones 🙂

Yeah, there is a whole slew of people on this forum making this stuff up. You are the densest person I have ever run into on here.

Yeah, we sit around thinking of ways to lie about how we are treated and what happens when we go to our Apple stores. Yup, a whole manual of stuff sitting next to me. *roll eyes*

Dude - you need to get out of this thread because clearly, your phone is fine and your experience is fine. Go return your phone 3 or more times and see what happens.

Clearly your post would indicate that this is hit or miss with these displays. I was fortunately too and got a really nice one. I wouldn't say it is real blue, but certainly not real yellow, so I think it is right in the middle as it should be. Whites look great, blacks are solid dark and colors are vivid.

I do think there are some that might would have mine though and would be just nit picky enough to bring it back, this is what Apple has to deal with. I do not envy them trying to satisfy some of these folks and that isn't to say that some don't have legit claims.

This whole thing is getting more frustrating and complicated. I am on the phone with Apple right now and they say they are aware of the yellow tint issue, but that they don't think it is many. People need to let them know. I am more frustrated than ever. The management said they would be willing to call the store and tell them to find me a clear screen. I don't think this is going to help. They can't guarantee me a good screen. The management rep said she was going to call the store and talk to them. She keeps putting me on hold. At this moment, she is calling the store to talk to the manager, we will see what happens.

teach5 -

I wish you good luck. My brother will be a first time Apple/iPhone user here in the next few days. He is anxious to get the phone but I don't want him to get a dude. I figure the longer we wait, the better the chances. I have already been through 2. I gave up with the AT&T store and will be buying it at Apple. However again, I am going to hold off as long as he can constrain his enthusiasm - before I get a new one. I so miss my crisp, vivid, white screen of my 3G. To think I just walked into the store and got that phone and no issues, boggles my mind. I wish Apple would make an announcement or something or someone gets this out to the blogs.

Today I took my 3Gs to the AT&T store where I bought it and showed them that half of my screen was yellow and washed out and the other half was more blue. The woman I spoke to was a bit dimissive and claimed that she saw no difference. It did not seem like she was really looking at it. As a matter of fact she would not take the phone from me for a closer look. I just had to stand there like an idot holding the phone up for her to see. Everyone there seemed a lot friendlier on Friday when they were taking my money...

She told me to take it to an Apple store if I was not happy.

I'm still trying to convince myself that the screen is not that bad.

You are the only one who is saying that Apple will not help you. Everyone else who had a yellow screen seems to have no problem having there phone replaced by Apple. I am beginning to see why Apple may be a little less anxious to help you. The way you are acting in here, I sure would not want to deal with you if I worked for Apple.

First you say they would not return your phone, and now your saying that you returned it 3 or more times?

I am beginning to see the other side of the story now...:)
