Can't Connect iPhone to Ad Hoc Network

I have been trying to connect my iphone to my Macbook Pro via Ad Hoc network for a couple days now and I can't get it to work. When I choose the ad hoc network from the iphone settings it seems to connect, but the 3g icon at the top of the screen never changes to the the wifi icon. I have tried using DHCP and manual ip addressing for the ad hoc network and neither seem to work. Has anyone else had this problem?

Also, I'm using the new 3.0 firmware if that helps.

Macbook Pro 15in Core2Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

are you trying to connect your iphone to your mbp to access the web?

if so, what i do with my imac and my iphone follows:

1 with airport on, open sharing under internet & network preferences

2 highlight internet sharing (don't check the box yet)

3 choose an option for 'share your connection from' - my imac is wired to my modem, so I opt for ethernet. if your mbp connects to a wireless router, i would choose airport.

4 check a box for 'to computers using:' here the choice is airport

5 click the 'airport options' button > here, whether or not you've created the adhoc network through any other means, it wouldn't hurt to fill the data fields again. on at least one occasion, the info here (password) was different than the password i created for the same ad hoc network i created through airport's taskbar menu > click ok

6 check the box for internet sharing

7 confirm that you want to start sharing

8 the icon on the taskbar should fill in with an upward pointing arrow

9 on the iphone, open wifi settings and choose the ssid name for the network and input the password (if you opted so for your network)

that should grant you access on the iphone to use safari or otherwise check email/im/text/map something at wifi speeds

hope that helps

good luck

Thanks, aleitry. I was trying to do this and found this thread with a web search. I had the same problem with the iPhone dropping the ad hoc connection, but I found a work around that's acceptable to me. I use airplane mode to disable the cellular data connection, then re-enable wifi. That keeps the ad hoc connection up and the wifi symbol is displayed.

hate to say it man but i just tried it myself with my 3gs.

works though for some reason the wifi connection when going ad-hoc only (not internet sharing as I described previously) cuts in and out.

so here go the steps i took (keep in mind I had deleted the apple remote app from my apps on itunes because i use boxee - and i am using a different phone than the one i used previously):
1. downloaded the remote app from the app store
2. performed sync between itunes and iphone to install remote app on iphone
3. disconnected iphone from mac
4. turned on airport from taskbar
5. chose 'create network' from airport menu > name: 'testt' > clicked ok > airport icon on taskbar filled in with a computer icon within it
6. in mac open itunes and left it running
7. in iphone wi-fi settings > chose testt and confirmed that a check-mark appeared next to the name
8. in iphone opened remote app
9. in iphone remote app chose settings > chose add library
10. in iphone remote app provided a 4 digit code that will be used in 12
11. if wifi connection is working, in mac itunes should have your iphone's name under devices with the remote app next to it **note that this should look a bit different than the way your iphone is recognized in itunes when connected via usb**
12. in itunes highlighted the iphone name > itunes then shows the code input screen > input the 4 digit code given in iphone remote app = some sort of acknowledgment in itunes or iphone that your remote is connected should come up
13. in iphone remote app settings turned on 'stay connected'

that's it, from then on out as long as my itunes is on and the remote app is open, I get access to my tunes.

when i choose a song on the iphone and start playback, a playlist named 'remote' pops up in itunes.

again, for some reason, with my 3gs the wifi adhoc connection is intermittent. that is definitely not the case when i connect via internet sharing. the wifi icon on the iphone is solid and doesn't drop the signal via internet sharing.

anyhow - just letting you know that it works on my end with 10.5.7 and the newest version of the remote app. good luck and report back if it works out for ya.

wow - sorry for the delay but these forums are not that user friendly.

hope the wedding went off ok.

short answer then is that you can disregard all that internet sharing stuff i wrote before because i managed to get the iphone remote app working a long time ago just by following the instructions the app page gives you. creating the adhoc network through the taskbar menu should work with or without a pwd.

iirc, there's a step there where itunes has to 'see' your iphone and you have to input the correct code to connect them.

I'm trying to use the iTunes remote on the iPhone to control my iTunes for a wedding reception that I'm doing the music for and I'm in at the same time (my bro's wedding).

I'm still trying to get it to work. I'm even on a different computer and it's not working. I don't know what the deal is.

I tried changing the channel to 9 and using a password. It still doesn't seem to work. Anyone else have any ideas?

It doesn't seem to be getting an IP address from my computer. I'm not real sure what the deal is.
