I am having a strange internet problem in which some websites won't load and others will. For example
http://discussions.apple.com/ works but
http://www.apple.com/ and me.com doesn't (so no email access, either). Amazon and CNN won't connect but the BBC and Google and Facebook is fine. I just can't figure it out. Everything worked yesterday and today it doesn't. The ISP were no help.
You can make changes. I recommend you connect to the modem by ethernet hardwire (not wifi) while making changes. You'll need the owner's manual, which you can download from the Support page of the manufacturers website if you don't have it (look at the bottom or back of the modem for the exact model number.) The owner's manual will give you the IP address of the modem, plus the default ID and password (ID is probably "admin"; pw is either "admin" or it's blank).
Once you're connected by hardwire, enter the modem's IP address in your browser bar and that will take you to the login screen of the modem. Enter ID & pw, and you'll have access to all modem settings at that point. I recommend you change the default password to something of your own choosing, otherwise anyone else can gain access to the settings on your modem.
Eventually you'll find the MTU setting; I recommend setting it to 1400 at first. You shouldn't have to get much smaller than that. Reboot the modem to see if this fixes your problem.
BTW, if you can't find the modem password, the owners manual will tell you how to reset factory defaults which will reset the ID & pw to whatever's in the manual. Good luck & don't mess around with too many settings. Or change only one at a time, reboot the modem to see what effect so you can change it back later if needed. But you probably don't need to change anything besides MTU.
I am having the exact same issue. Some sites have simply never loaded on my iMac, such as www.dailyplate.com, and I just discovered that www.ehow.com also does not load. I have tried upgrading to Snow Leopard, repairing disk permissions, and using Firefox and Opera, and using an Express as an ethernet bridge. Nothing seems to fix the issue.
I am connected wirelessly through a new Airport Extreme and my Windows laptops (all 3) as well as my iTouch connect without issue. Without success, I just plugged in a Linksys router, connected to that network and even tried adjusting the MTU to various levels.
