iPhone 3Gs camera not working, screen frozen gray, photos blank, any ideas?

Hi all, hope someone can assist. I am using the new iPhone 3Gs. Periodically when I attempt to use the camera, after tapping the camera key, the screen pops up with the "closed lens" screen but it is frozen there and the screen is grayed out. When I attempt to look at photos, it shows nothing at all saved in photos. The only way to enable the camera is to reset, (I was shown by another iPhone user), by holding the home key while turning the on/off key and resetting. That works, but it's not long before the camera or video is disabled again. Is there anyone who can assist with any ideas? Could it be a setting or do I have a defective phone? Thanks, any help would be appreciated!

I tried a few of the suggested fixes after I had upgraded my iOS and then restored the phone to fix the camera. None of them worked. The reset-reboot option didn't work either. So I let it sit. Didn't bother with it for a few weeks, but used it the way I had before. Doing normal stuff. Checking work emails, texts, net, apps. Then I plugged it into an itunes player for the holidays so the music would sound better. I took a shot and went to the camera to see if it would open up and it did. After that, I took a picture and it worked fine. Just wanted to share my experience. Good luck.

My brand new iPhone 3GS, free from AT&T with a two-year contract extension and $15 data plan upgrade, began exhibiting the same problem--the app activates to a blank screen, sometimes if I double tap the app it go to a closed shutter for a split second and then back to black/blank/grey or whatever.

A hard reset, as suggested here, seems to have done the trick.

The phone being new and within the 30-day swap period, I decided to call AT&T to find out what they knew and they were more than happy to tell me they knew nothing about the problem, had never heard of such a thing, had never had a phone returned for such an issue, and to call 800-my-apple for help. Realizing I was dealing with lazy idiots, I called Apple instead and the rep was very helpful.

She informed me that there was a fifty-fifty chance as to whether it was the software or the camera mechanism and sent me links to a tutorial as to how to back up all of my information on the phone to iTunes, how to delete and reinstall the operating system, and then how to restore my data and contacts from the backup. I've also been given a case # in case I need to follow up with them.

Once that's done, if the camera keeps malfuncitoning, I should either try to exchange it at the AT&T store if they decide to be helpful, or I can drive fifty miles north to my nearest Apple store and get it exchanged for another phone.

Hopefully the reset fixed the issue for good. Otherwise, I hope it's the software and the recommended reinstall will do the trick. If my phone keeps screwing up, I'll exchange it for another.

I hope sharing my experience will be helpful to someone else having the same problem. I was totally bummed and positive that I was going to have to replace my phone and lose all of my information, but this blog and the lady at 800-my-apple was as helpful as the teenagers at the AT&T store weren't.

Thanks, everyone.

To all,

My 3GS iPhone camera issue started last night. I would try to open it & I would only get a blank screen. I started googling & found this...

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/08/04/iphone-4-camera-wont-open-try-these-steps/

and performed only #1 from the article. It worked!!! Apparently I had so many apps running that there was no memory left for the camera to function. I did not realize I had so many open.

I hope this helps everyone.

Happy New Year!

Same as Snaptease on top of page 8 :

"I very carefully removed the mainboard from the phone and then the camera. Then instead of trying to fit the mainboard to the camera, I reconnected the mainboard and camera then fitted both back into the phone. Hey presto my camera now works again."

Did the same thing I Tadam ! Got my camera back to life. Just a contact / connection problem. The problem comes with trying to reassemble the mainboard to the camera's connector that's hidden behind (after a battery replacement in my case). That's not the right way to fit all that in.

The right way is described overhere : Remove the camera from the plastic body, plug it's connector to the mainboard side then put both back into the phone.

Hope that helps. God I feel so good now it works again. :-D

After not having a working camera for months I was getting ready to try and open it up to fix it or pay to get it repaired, then I read your post, tried pressing the volume button whilst looking at that bloody camera shutter and it flippin' worked! Can't believe it. Thanks so much NatsH for that fix. Hope you wrote that article and helped more people like me.

Many thanks again,

Matt

I have been researching this problem for the last few days. The camera on my iPhone 3GS stopped working and the shutter on the screen stayed shut.

I tried a hard reset, and erase and restore, fiddling with the volume buttons, switching off location services and unloading apps from memory. Basically everything software related in this thread. None of that worked.

In the end I bought a new camera unit and took the phone apart and replaced the camera myself. This solved the problem and the camera now works perfectly. So it was just a case of a component giving up the ghost.

This procedure is not for the faint hearted and will invalidate your warranty, so obviously if your phone is still in warranty just take it into an Apple store instead. If like me you have no warranty then Google the help sites that tell you how to replace the camera. As a last resort for me this found the problem.

My fix was due to a screw that was not tightened. Sounds weird right. However when I came across this fix when I was trying to fix the mute toggle switch. When i started to remove the toggle switch i realized that this screw was not all the way tightened. so I gave it a twist, about half a turn, but the screen assembly back on, and the camera then worked. To test it again I backed the screw back off a half a turn, and low and behold the camera stopped working. I am thinking it was a ground issue.

The screw is located the most upper left corner of the frame. To access it you must remove the 2 screws holding on the screen assembly. remove the screen (suction cup is easiest), release the 3 connectors holding the screen assembly one, then look in the very upper left corner. the small screw was the culprit.

hope this helps

I also had the same problem with my camera. I tried everything listed... UNTIL it dawned on me as i was looking at my other broken 3g guts...THE CAMERA CABLE was unplugged. I removed the screen, then the mother board, camera screw. (top right) I then plugged the camera cable into the mother board, placed the camera back into the socket, replaced the screw, connected the remaing cables, then all mother board screws (BECAREFUL not to break the little metal piece at the bottem right, near the do not remove sticker), connected the screen, put the two screws at the bottem back, closed up the phone. Turned it on...went to camera...and BOOM, worked perfectly! Good luck to everyone!

Great!

You are right, I had changed the battery of the iphone3 and not connected the camera properly.

By doing it again, this time also removing camera and fixing it properly to the mother board FIRST, and then

fixing everything again - camera worked!

Lets see if it runs for a good long time. Ps the late answer (2014) is because our son will get the iphone3 🙂

He is soon 9 (no SIM card for him though yet).

Thanks & all the best
