IPhone 3G S plagued by sound issues (confirmed).

OK if you lock your home screen and put your ear to the speaker you should be able to hear a high frequency sound. I tried it on my 3G S and the sound was defiantly there!

Ok.. Well it doesn't seem to be all system sounds..

If you go into Settings > Sounds...

And then go through each of the sound options... Here are my results...

New Text Message:
None: No High Pitch
Tri-tone: No High Pitch
Chime: No High Pitch
*Glass: High Pitch Noise*
*Horn: High Pitch Noise*
Bell: No High Pitch
Electronic: No High Pitch

New Voicemail: No High Pitch
*New Mail: High Pitch Noise*
Sent Mail: No High Pitch
Calendar Alerts: No High Pitch
*Lock Sounds: High Pitch Noise*
Keyboard Clicks: No High Pitch Noise

Also... Not an option, but I have also noticed the sound that plays when a text message is SENT also has the noise after it..

I don't hear it, even in the sample at the website linked above. It may be that my volume is never as high as 50%. Could also be that I have substantial ringing in my good ear and even more in the one that's deaf. Could also be my loss of high frequency sensitivity.

Don't feel bad! I didn't know I had a problem till I found this thread!! I do get the high pitch whine during similar instances such as hitting the sleep/wake button to sleep or lock the screen. It lasts for about three seconds. However I have to be in a completely silent room, no fans or air conditioning or tv, and hold the phone's receiver at just the right angle to my ear for me to hear it. Since I generally am never in those conditions the problem is insignificant to me.

I'm thinking if Apple did the following as part of the update we might get rid of this annoying issue:

1) Re-recorded/Re-sampled the system sounds for the 3GS a little lower in volume and higher in quality that might eliminate the distortion piece

2) Turn off the microphone when playing back sound to get rid of any interference or loop that was picked up

3) Turn off the speakers when recording audio and only leave mic channel open then when you click the stop recording button the process is reversed. Mic shut off speakers on and plays the stop sound

Not sure if any of this will make a difference, maybe its a hardware issue but the items I listed above could be done in software and give me some hope that this will be fixed soon.

I have I notice, right before recording videos or memos. I turn down the volume down to about the one bar or block. This only controls the alert ping sound that it makes when pressing the bottom. By doing this, it minimizes the high pitch buzz sound that emits during recording and about 4 seconds after it's done.

This will not affect the master volume of what one is recording, since OS 3.O now has three different
controls for volume. The problem exist with the Ping alert that the iPhone makes that carries through the recordings and also when the Mic volume is set on high.

Rule of thumb with actual Microphones never put a hot Mic next to its live speaker or you'll get feedback. Ever notice that most cell phones have the receiver far away from the speaker phone. Most cells have it on the back of the phone.

I went to the Apple store and tested all the iPhones 3GS on display and all emit high pitch sound when the Alert PIng is set on high volume or pretty much any higher than one block in my case.

Remedy: Use the headphones when recording or put it in silent (it will still record, since it only silents the Ping Alert when recording) or like I do right before recording, bring the alert volume down to one block so you'll know when recording. Don't worry cause it's a one time set and memorized by the iPhone and it will not interfere with ringer and master volume when viewing videos or listening to memos. I did also notice when right before charging it make this awful alert sound that sound nothing like my 1st and 2nd gen iPhone.

Apple will pretty much patch this in the next update hopefully in 3.1
