Battery dies in 6 hrs

I had the 1st gen. iPhone and that battery lasted for atleast 2 days without a charge and now with my new 3Gs one, it has died the last 2 days after 6hrs, has to be a bad battery, i just use it to check my email and sometimes send pics but thats it. trying to get a hold of apple about this and a recorder comes on after i go thru all the prompts and they said there support staff is not available try online help. i think they open support at 9a.m. so if this is the case why dont they say that on the phone so we dont have to go thru all there prompts. Ug. anyone else having problems with battery life on the new 3gs phone?

I'm not sure if I should be glad or not, but my phone is doing the same. I'm just guessing it has to do with the power the iPhone 3Gs. But still, Apple claimed longer battery life and I have yet to see it.

My current stats:

Locations Services: Off
Push: On
Brightness: little more than a quarter
3G: Off
Usage: 47 Minutes
Standby- 2 Hours, 48 Minutes
Call Time: 10 minutes
Texting: Just about 20-30 texts

Current battery life right now 95% at 12:52 PST

I will update later tonight.I still feel like the 3G had a better battery life.

Its one thing if Apple says the battery is going to last longer....but what about all of the reviews that I have read that claim much improved battery life?

I even emailed the author of one of these reviews (one of the most credible people in the tech world), and he told me exactly what he had done so far today:

According to this guy,he had used his 3GS for 6.5 hours so far today, constantly downloading email (200 or so), syncing calendars and contacts, making and receiving 3-4 phone calls, and periodically using apps and the browser. And he has 86% left. He had not listened to music or watched video today, or taken pictures or recorded video, but he felt confident that if he had, he would have had no problem getting thru the day.

Contrast that with my day:

I started with 100% at 8:45 am. Everything was on except for Push Notifications. I launched Google Maps, and had it running while I drove for approximately 20-25 mins, and then I put it in standby. Later, I used the browser for 10 minutes on 3G...then took 4 or 5 pictures. Then I used Motion-X GPS for 20 minutes. I used the browser again for 10 minutes using 3G. I received a 1 minute phone call. I drove home with the phone in standby. I browsed on wifi for 15 mins. I played 1 level of Star Defense. And at ~ 3pm my battery level was at 18% so I had to recharge it.

So my phone is essentially unusable at this point. I have followed everyones advice. It has gone thru several charge cycles. I have even allowed it to completely discharge like several people suggested.

At this point I can conclude 1 of 2 things:

1) Either some of us have bad batteries, and they need to be replaced

or

2) Apple gave the reviewers phones with superior batteries

I was so excited about this phone. It is replacing an original iPhone 2G, which is the best purchase I have ever made. I dont think I have ever used anything that I have purchased more than my iPhone 2G....However, I am beginning to just want my iPhone 2G back. Right from the start, this product launch has been a PITA. From the shipping confusion....to this. Very un-Apple-like. I am just getting tired of it. Dont get me wrong, I think its a great product. But I dont know whats going to happen when I goto my appointment tomorrow at the Genius Bar and ask for a new battery or a new phone...and if they dont give me one....what do I do then? My old phone is already shut off....I cant use this one because the battery doesnt last. Its completely useless. What do I do then?

Oh well, Ill cross that bridge tomorrow...

last night the phone went completely dead i put it on the charger over night. woke up and unplugged it at the same time 5:30 am. it sat in my truck all day till i got off work at 2:00 pm. instead of dropping 9% like yesterday after work, it only dropped 2%. i havent used it much today, but its at 94%. seems like letting the battery die and then fully recharging it is making it last longer.

Since learning of the force quit function, I've done that each time I've exited safari and I've noticed a huge improvement in life on standby. Posted at ~3 pm with 90% and now at 7 I've sent about 3 texts and left it on standby for the rest and I'm down to 83%. That's in stark contrast to being at 67% last night at 2 am and being dead at 5.

Currently- Push on
Bluetooth- off
Wifi- on
3G- on

Quitting the iPod and Safari applications seems to quite helpfully keep them from draining the battery in the background

I'm in the same boat...

The first two days I got my phone it lasted for two days with heavy use. Now the past two to three days it drops from the 97% to 75% to 11% in the span of 6 hours just sitting on my desk (bluetooth and wifi off). All of a sudden it went back up to 75% and then two seconds after went back down to 11%. I'm going to try and cycle the battery for a few days but I made and appointment at the genius bar on Friday in case it doesn't work...so we'll see how it goes.
