Component video out not working on iPhone 3GS?

Upgraded on Friday from an original iPhone to iPhone 3GS, and yesterday tried playing a video on my TV via the Apple component video cable. The video looks scrambled, perhaps because of mis-matched scan rate. The same video plays fine from my original iPhone.

TV is a Sony Vega with 480i component in. Video is the Speed Report video podcast, but it has happened on all the videos I've tried so far.

Has anyone else been able to get component video out working?

Same issue. The same videos play on my iPhone 3G video attached to a component video cable, but gets scrambled on the 3GS. As previously stated, I've played with all the software settings with no success. This is not running from a dock, it's running straight from my component video cables. I am also running it from a Sony Vega TV. Not sure if this really makes a difference, since the 3G seem to run it fine.

Count me in. My original EDGE phone plays video like a champ, but the 3GS just outputs a scrambled mess. I've eliminated these potential culprits:
* NTSC setting (as it should be)
* cable (works fine with OG iPhone)
* Universal Dock (ditto)
* The TV (ditto)
* The content (even streamed podcasts from iTunes.app are a no-go, so it's not a DRM thing)
* The iPhone 3GS itself (I actually took it to get a replacement at the Genius Bar this morning, had to peel off my Invisible Shield and everything! Alas, the replacement phone has the exact same symptoms). Not sure if this means there's an innate hardware problem, or software. I'm hoping software, but if it's somehow a hardware problem, Apple's gonna have a big problem on their hands.

Honestly, my patience would be fine if I hadn't had to peel off my invisible shield. The dude at the bar either should have known, or should have done a better job of investigating. But now, needlessly, I've got to pay for — and wait for — a replacement shield. And I was so proud to have gotten that one on perfectly!

I actually just went back to the Apple Store, and we plugged my 3GS into their big HDTV with my cable. Worked like a charm! So, my question to you: are all of your component-capable monitors CRTs? Or do you also have an LCD TV to test?

I had a hunch it was because my TV is a low-def CRT (old-school flatscreen trinitron-style tube set, but relatively new, maybe 5 years old). Still not 100% convinced, but just about 95%.

Do the same videos look OK when viewed on the screen of your 3GS?

I ask because I have some videos that played well on my 2G unit which are distorted on my 3GS. After reprocessing (Videora) they look fine. Seems the video hardware in the 3GS is different from the earlier models.

The component out is usually 480p. If you feed it to a 480 i unit it will scramble. If you use the older composite Yellow RCA it is 480i and will work with older sets. I will check it out with my DLP and let you know.

If your assessment were true before the 3GS came along, then I should never have gotten proper video to show up on my TV. I've had the Universal Dock and the Component AV Cable hooked up to my standard-def CRT television for over a year now, and it's been smooth sailing, beautiful picture. Now, with the 3GS, the video won't output properly.

The component output is 480i for the iPhone and iPhone 3G, according to the product page. Granted, that page does say that the 2nd-gen iPod Touch puts out 480p…so, if the iPhone 3GS matches those specs, then you may be onto something. But the page doesn't even mention the 3GS except for the icon at the bottom.

@w7ox — all of my videos play just fine on the iPhone 3GS screen, even the ones that are higher-res than the recommended 640x480. But, even still, I should be able to put YouTube.app through this cable, and have it work. Same with podcasts streamed right from iTunes.app

Dude, relax.

Bugs happen. Incompatibilities happen. Not only that, but anyone who thinks the accessories they purchase are gonna remain compatible with every device they ever purchase…is deluding themselves. Truth is, I'm amazed at how well Apple planned-ahead with that 30-pin dock connector. How many electronics manufacturers do you know that have maintained the same exact multi-function data/power/AV cable design for eight years in a row? And these particular eight years, when everything's moving so fast.

I got an answer from devbugs@apple.com:

"Engineering has determined that this issue behaves as intended based on the following information:

This is not a bug. It is intentional. Since 2nd gen iPod touch all products put out progressive output on component. This is stated in the user guide."

So, looks like only the iPhone, iPhone 3G and first gen iPod touch will output to my TV.
