Component video out not working on iPhone 3GS?

Upgraded on Friday from an original iPhone to iPhone 3GS, and yesterday tried playing a video on my TV via the Apple component video cable. The video looks scrambled, perhaps because of mis-matched scan rate. The same video plays fine from my original iPhone.

TV is a Sony Vega with 480i component in. Video is the Speed Report video podcast, but it has happened on all the videos I've tried so far.

Has anyone else been able to get component video out working?

here is something from the store site

"Note: Component video output to television is supported by iPod nano (3rd and 4th generation), iPod touch (2nd generation), and iPod classic at 480p or 576p resolution; and by iPod touch (1st generation), iPhone, and iPhone 3G at 480i or 576i resolution."

so maybe the new iPhone outputs 480p not 480i.

I disagree with your position because Apple has specifically marketed the Dock connector as a way to provide long term compatibility between iPods and iPhones and accessories. The Dock connector has changed over time, it is not the same as it was when I got my 3rd generation iPod (the first iPod with a Dock connector). Modern Dock accessories that provide power over USB (instead of the original Firewire) won't charge older iPod and pre iPhone Dock accessories show up as incompatible on the iPhone. For being a so-called "standard" Apple's Dock connector has certainly been a moving target.

It's makes no sense to me why Apple would sell a Dock connector component AV cable that works perfectly fine with an original iPhone and my old CRT TV and then ship a upgraded iPhone 3GS that cannot do the same thing. Branded marketing like the Made for iPod and Works with iPhone is supposed to make it easy for the consumer to know that things are going to work together, unfortunately Apple seems to be missing the mark with this branding.

According to Apple's KB article HT1454 (last modified August 10, 2009), all iPhone models output 480i/576i video with the Apple Component AV Cable (see the tables). The same tables show the Apple Composite AV Cable should work with them as well.

Progressive output would explain why a TV that only accepts interlaced input (480i) would show flickering instead of a proper video signal.
