How can I transfer stuff off my old Sony Ericsson onto my iPhone 3gs?

Hi there, iPhone complete newbie here. It took me about half an hour to find the pin to open the Sim card holder last night when I first opened my new iPhone 3gs, so I'm stumbling around at the moment, I'm afraid, trying to work out how to use it!!

Is there any way that I can transfer all the contacts (ie. names and phone numbers) from my old Sony Ericsson K800i onto the new iPhone? I've tried bluetooth, but have since discovered that the iPhone's bluetooth is really limited (why?!!) and won't allow data transfer. So will I have to manually type them all in again, or is there a way of syncing the two phones together?

If the contacts on your Ericsson phone are also in your computer, the contacts will probably sync to the iPhone through iTunes. The blue-tooth is limited on the iPhone and you cannot sync your old phone with your new one. If I were you, I would start by downloading the User's Manual and reading up on the various features, etc. To start with, you need to download iTunes 8.2, which you can get by clicking on "Downloads" at the top of this page. After you have had a chance to read up things, let us know how you are doing. I'm sure everyone will try to help you.

You can put your Sony's SIM in the iPhone and transfer the contacts. It doesn't work the other way around because the iPhone doesn't store contacts on the SIM

Import contacts from a SIM:
Choose Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then tap Import SIM Contacts.

Thanks both of you. I think one of the problems I've got is that the iPhone over here in the UK is only available on one network, O2, whereas up until now I've been on Vodafone. I don't think the iPhone will accept a Vodafone SIM. But I'll give it a go, thanks. Will download the manual, too. Good bedtime reading!

I've managed to bluetooth my contacts from my Ericsson onto my laptop, and they're now safely stored in Windows contacts (I presume that's Vista's name for Windows Address Book). But when I tried to sync them back into my iPhone, it asked whether I wanted to merge these with those already on the phone (synced from Yahoo Mail). I clicked yes and it's been syncing for well over an hour now!

Is this usual? And if I cancel the sync, will it wipe anything off either PC or iPhone?

I cancelled, anyway, tried again and it worked in about 30 seconds. But photos have come through successfully, but no contacts. Got this error report instead:

"iPhone could not sync information to the iPhone because a connection could not be established to the iPhone."

Strange report, considering it synced the photos ok...
