Built-In Microphone & I-Chat AV

I have a G4 I-Book with the built-in microphone. I was wondering if anyone knew if the built-in microphone can be used to audio chat on I-Chat AV. If so, how do I do this. If not, what is the built-in microphone used for?

Hi Richard,

Welcome to the Appple Discussion Pages.

In Addition to Ian's advice I would point out that in some cases the Mic will pick up hard drive noise and any other background noise as well.

This may be distracting to others listening to your Auido.

Also if you have External speakers you may have to move things about to get around any feedback problems.

Hi Richard,

Go to System Prefernces > Sound >Input tab.
Make sure the nternal Mic is selected there and that the blue bar moves to at least halfway when you talk. (the slider will probably need to be at 75%

Then go to iChat >iChat menu >Preferences >Video section
Go to the Microphone dropdwon and amake sure the internal mic is selected there as well.

Then go to the View menu in iChat.
Select Show Audio Status

Last go to the menu to the ri=ght of Buddies (IS labled Audio or Video depending on whether you have a camera or not).
Make sure there is a tick next to Microphone Enabled

Now you should be good to go.

thanx Ralph,

I've checked everything that you said but I still can't invite anyone to audio chat. My computer and I-chat seems to be gaining input from my microphone but I just can't invite anyone. The button that i'm supposed to press in order to invite someone is gray and therefore cannot be pressed. Is there any particular reason for this? Sorry for all the questions, i'm a Mac Rookie. Thanks!

Hello Richard,

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

The button that i'm supposed to press in order to invite someone is gray...

Did you click once on your buddy's name in your Buddy List? If you have done that correctly, the name should be shown in a blue highlight bar.

Then, if your buddy has a Mac that can do audio chat,
b your
audio (phone) iCon should darken and allow you to invite your buddy.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I think that I have everything set up correctly now. My last question would be: who am I able to audio-chat with? Does it have to be a Mac User? Does it have to be someone with the audio capabilities icon showing next to their username? Or can anyone hear me regardless of if they have a microphone of their own to respond to me with?

Every computer comes with an internal mic, as far as I remember (at least all Macintoshes do). So you should be able to chat with anyone that is using either the latest version of AIM for Windows or any Mac user using iChat.

Feel free to test it out with me if you'd like. My screenname is on 24/7 (for the most part except for network issues) and it's all automated. See my profile for details.

Just FYI, Ryan,

At least
b my
DP G5 has NO microphone built in, or built in audio, either, for that matter.

If Richard sets a check (tick) mark in his
b iChat > View > Show Audio Status
, he can see which buddies have audio capability. The audio capable buddy's names will have the phone icon next to them. If he has also selected the
b iChat > View > Show Video Status
, the buddies who have camera icons next to their names will also likely have audio capability.

The current AIM for Windows does not support audio only (what the PC folks call "talk") with Mac. Mac to PC audio is only supported as part of video connections. See the How do I Get Video and Audio Chats with PCs ? FAQ (toward the end) for confirmation.

Thanks Jim for the FYI 🙂

I think what I was trying to say is that all one piece Macs (meaning the iMac, iBook, Powerbook, anything with a computer and screen in one) have internal mics. I also should have added that bit about the Windows computer or the Mac needing a camera for the audio chat to work...I knew that...

I think I need some more sleep!
