"Failed to respond" cause has been found for me

I, like many of you, have been having problems with "xx failed to respond". I just found out from my ISP that the telephone company here (Pakistan) is blocking ports 5190 and 5060 which basically shuts down iChat and gives you that message. You can still text but audio and video are blocked. I guess they think I'll actually use the telephone and make them more money if they do this. The million dollar question...is there a way around this?

Hi,

Port 5190 can be moved within iChat.

Go to the iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts
Click once on the Account is question.
Click on the Server settings tab on the right.
Change the port from 5190 to 443

This will let you Text chat at least. Some people find they can then Video as well.

As you were texting me earlier it might be that this information about blocking ports is not what they say.

Some Countries insist the ISP do this for "security reasons".
Some ISP do it for the reasons you suggest (money)

Unfortunately port 5060 can not be moved.

iChat is supposed to be able to use a Proxy - but I have heard little succes on this front.

It might be possible if you could find some one to explain public Proxies to you.

It might als be possble to create a Virtual Private Network VPN to your Buddy and then use Bonjour (if they are on a Mac) Another area I know exists but do not know very much about.

Having said that you may get some hep on both these options in Getting Connected Discussions

Ralph,

Here's a port scan between 5059 and 5069. I can only assume that the lack of response by 5060 means it is blocked. If so, how am I still able to text chat?

Monty

Hi Monty,

If that is using the Mac Network Utility appliction it will only scan TCP ports.

You need something like IPNetMonitorX to scan UDP ports as well. Or at least one of the setting will tell you which posts are being used.

My Scan

Port Scanning host: 205.188.153.121

Open TCP Port: 5060 sip
Open TCP Port: 5061 sip-tls
Open TCP Port: 5062
Open TCP Port: 5063
Open TCP Port: 5064 ca-1
Open TCP Port: 5065 ca-2
Open TCP Port: 5066 stanag-5066
Open TCP Port: 5067
Open TCP Port: 5068
Open TCP Port: 5069 i-net-2000-npr......

....... Open TCP Port: 5188
Open TCP Port: 5189
Open TCP Port: 5190 aol
Port Scan has completed ...

Edited to fit.

It would appear that you are not getting port 5060 on TCP but that will not matter as iChat uses it on UDP and this is the info you need to find out (if that is blocked).

The plot thickens.

My ISP is routing my traffic through a tunnel now. I downloaded IPNetMonitorX and the tests seem to confirm that the tunnel is functioning if I'm interpreting the program correctly. I used some of the IPNetMonitors features to trace the route and discovered that I'm getting at least a .25 second delay consistently between two servers. Would that kind of delay cause a timeout issue that would result in me "not responding?" See below:

The second thing I discovered is that when I traceroute to login.oscar.aol.com I get up to one of their internal servers and then it never makes it to the final destination. I'm not sure if that is a protection feature and should be considered normal. See hops 16-18 above.

I rechecked my connection speeds and I'm at 460 down/319 up. I've also bypassed all routers and I'm connected directly via ethernet to the dsl modem. I'm not sure what else to try. Hopefully Apple reads these pages and realize they have a real problem based on the number of posts.

Monty,

Since you mentioned you were in Pakistan, I would like to draw your attention to my problem, I would really appreciate any input !

Background...
I am studying here in Canada, and used to do audio/video chat through MSN when me and my family had a PC. I just came back (from Lahore) and bought this PowerBook G4 and my family is still on the same PC.

Now the problem is that, with the same cable internet connection there(Worldcall) I cannot do audio/video between my iChat3 (with iSight) and their latest AIM (with a USB webcam). But, when they connect their computer to this new thing, the PTCL wireless (which is a wireless phone and also internet connection), it goes through and I get horrible video and somewhat good audio. They have opened all the firewall ports and everything described in these forums. I have also done the necesssary firewall settings on my Mac.

What I was thinking is that, do you specifically know if the cable modem they use, WEBSTAR, has any typical firewall settings, or have they (Worldcall) blocked any ports ? How can I resolve this problem, because I think the cable internet would give better speed and consequently better audio/video.

Thanks.

My son, Brian, just moved to Islamabad to teach at the International School in early September. He has an iBook with a G4 processor running OS X. I am on an iMac G5 running OS X 10.4.2. We had no problems with iChat while he was in the US. Now we get the "Failed to Respond" message all the time now. The message always seems to indicate that our machine is the one not responsing. The only thing I don't understand is that one time on September 11 he did connect with his sister on her G4 in Holland, Michigan. Could these ports ever be temporarily enabled? I will be happy to provide details of our experience to anyone working to solve your problem, since I think it may also be our problem.
