Guitar USB Lightsnake...other problems

So, I've been reading the forums and trying different things but dont know what to do. I want to be able to hook up my bass/guitar up to logic but can't get any playback or monitoring. It seems to work fine with Garage Band. Tried making an aggregate device out of it but it didn't recognize it as the one I made.

Also is there a way to restore Logic to it's default settings? I'm thinking since I tried so many different things maybe I clicked a box I shouldn't have or something...please help. lol

You don't mention what interface you are using, & that's the critical info we need. Is there any particular reason why you have created an aggregate device? Normally you only need this if you want to use the Outputs on one device & the Inputs on a different one.

If you don't need to do this, then in +Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup+ I would suggest selecting your interface, & in +Logic > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Core Audio > Device:+ make sure your interface is selected there as well.

If you really do need an aggregate device, tell us so (& why!) & we can explore that instead.

As for your monitoring problems, you probably just need to explore the options for Software Monitoring & Auto Input Monitoring; these are dealt with on p.356 of the +Logic Pro 8 User Manual.+

(Not that his advice is really wrong, of course. It's just that there are still options to explore. We can rebuild you!)

Thank you for your generous comments.

Is everything in Logic silenced? What happens if you play a Software Instrument or an Apple Loop? Since you are now using Built-in for monitoring, any sound from Logic will come through your Line Out or your Headphones (or Speakers). Do you hear anything from other applications, or Alert sounds?

Plus:

You say it's picking up the Instrument. You imply it has recorded it. If so, your trials are nearly over & success is within your grasp! Select one of the Audio Regions you have recorded, & click on +Sample Editor.+

Do you see waveforms, or just a flat line?

If waveforms, then all that is wrong is monitoring — easy fix.

That's actually a good sign - when you unplugged the cable, your input reverted to the built-in microphone, and you got feedback, showing your in/out paths are functional.

For this kind of situation, it can be helpful to install Sound Source. It's a free little utility which enables menu bar access to your inputs/outputs and in many cases, for people not using a 'proper' interface, can be very helpful, particularly for those with multiple in/out options.

A quick review.

• Your interface is working. You are recording guitar with it. Success!
• In +Audio MIDI Setup,+ you have selected Built-in for Inputs & Outputs.
• However, you can't hear anything playing in Logic.

+Please note that we are now dealing with an entirely different question; this is no longer about your interface, which is fixed.+

So… what might cause Logic to go all quiet?

• Do you have the Output Volume turned up in +System Preferences > Sound?+
• Do you hear sounds from other applications, & from alerts?
• In Logic, do you have your Master Output set at 0dB?
• Is the Yellow Solo button on? Is anything Soloed? (Option-click on it to check)
• Is your Track muted? Do other Tracks with (e.g) Apple Loops on them play audibly?
• Are the Outputs of your Tracks set to +Out 1-2,+ & are the level faders up?

There are a couple of circumstances that can be problematic when using auto input
monitoring with record-enabled tracks:
• Singers cannot hear themselves while Logic Pro is in play or record mode. All they can hear is the old recording. Switch off Auto Input Monitoring in this situation.
• The track cannot be heard, even though Logic Pro is not in record mode. Switch on Auto Input Monitoring to hear audio on the track.

_To switch auto input monitoring on, do one of the following:_
• Choose +Options > Audio > Auto Input Monitoring+ from the main menu bar (or use the +Toggle Auto Input Monitoring+ key command).
• Control-click the Record button in the Transport, and turn on the +Auto Input Monitoring+ setting in the pop-up menu.

alright so I've basically figured it out. I feel kinda silly for having had everyone go through so much trouble just to figure this out, but what's happening is that it's recording and i can hear it, just not WHILE its recording. I can only hear what I've recorded once I remove the Lightsnake from the computer...which is incredibly inconvenient because I keep time by hearing myself..any way to change that? I can hear loops but not when the lightsnake is plugged in.

It's back to the +Audio MIDI Setup+ for you, young person!

You need to double-check that +while the Lightsnake is connected+ you still have Built-in selected for Input & Output.

UNLESS what you mean is that you can hear everything apart from what you're recording. If that's the situation, the solution is even easy. Get your Software Monitoring & Auto Input Monitoring preferences sorted. I'll paste them below for your reading pleasure:

-----

_Using Software Monitoring_
The Software Monitoring function allows you to monitor incoming audio through any effects plug-ins that are inserted into an armed audio channel. Audio inputs must be assigned on the record-enabled tracks for software monitoring functionality.

The effect plug-ins are monitored but not recorded. This can be useful during a recording session. As an example: During vocal recording, many singers prefer hearing their performance with a little reverb, but the track is recorded dry (without effects).

_To monitor a track with effect plug-ins during recording:_
1 Turn on the +Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Core Audio > Software Monitoring+ option.
+Note: No monitoring of any kind will occur if this option is switched off for the currently active audio hardware.+
2 Insert the desired effect into the audio channel, arm the track, and start recording.
The effect will be part of the monitor mix, but will not be recorded.

_Auto Input Monitoring_
If Auto Input Monitoring is switched on, you will only hear the input signal during the actual recording—before and afterwards, you’ll hear the previously recorded audio on the track, while the sequencer is running. This helps you to judge punch in and punch out points when punch recording. If Auto Input Monitoring is switched off, you will always hear the input signal. Auto Input Monitoring, when switched on, also allows you to hear the input source when Logic Pro is stopped, making it easy to set levels.

_To switch auto input monitoring on, do one of the following:_
• +Choose Options > Audio > Auto Input Monitoring+ from the main menu bar (or use the +Toggle Auto Input Monitoring+ key command).
• Control-click the Record button in the Transport, and turn on the +Auto Input Monitoring+ setting in the pop-up menu.

There are a couple of circumstances that can be problematic when using auto input monitoring with record-enabled tracks:
• Singers cannot hear themselves while Logic Pro is in play or record mode. All they can hear is the old recording. Switch off Auto Input Monitoring in this situation.
• The track cannot be heard, even though Logic Pro is not in record mode. Switch on Auto Input Monitoring to hear audio on the track.

I absolutely do not get this stuff: I have a Lightsnake and am having the exact same issue!

I tried to follow this thread, but nothing seems to work and there are WAY too many dead ends in Logic. Could they make this any more confusing!!?!?!?

When I unplug the Lightsnake, I can hear my file. When it's plugged in, no sound from Logic at ALL. (system and Garageband audio fine).

The Lightsnake is input only. Logic 8 can only use one device at a time. If that device is an +input only+ device, of course it will not play back - it cannot play back to a NO output device.
You have to set up an aggregate device in the Audio Midi Setup. That agg device wil use the combination of the LS inputs with the Macs' built in outputs, and create ONE (virtual) device that Logic can use.
Logic 9 can use separate devices for in- and output. It has been one of the most prolific issues.

How to set up an aggregate device:

Thank you, Erik. THAT made sense, and happily Logic 9 will solve.

Still not working, tho, so here's what I did: Aggregate device using the Lightsnake and built-in output only. DO I need to understand that 'clock master' stuff? I did check the Lightsnake to resample, and closed out of the editor.

Then, I selected the aggregate device in Logic audio prefs, but still no sound. Also, at one point I unplugged the lightsnake and when it was plugged back in, it was not recognized as the same "unknown USB device" in the midi editor ... one was grayed out and there was a second in the list. I deleted my other aggregate device and made a new one as above.

Thanks ... I'll keep trying. Any other clarity appreciated.
