Apple.com overcharging for tax!

I know this probably isn't the right forum for this, but since I'm buying a MacBook pro and because I'm angry, I figured I'd post it here....

The sales tax in my county is 6.75%. I've triple checked it by calling the county and asking them, checking my receipts from local stores, and checking the tax rates that other websites charge me for purchases. Nevertheless, when I purchased my Macbook pro from Apple.com and the tax seemed a little high, it turned out that they didn't charge me 6.75%. They charged me 8.25%. There's NO CITY OR COUNTY in my entire state that charges that much!! They ended up stealing almost $50 extra from me. I've called Apple and they just gave me their standard form reply message about taxes (which didn't even pertain to problem).

Has this happened to anyone else? What are my options? I will definitely be notifying the IRS about the tax fraud here, but I would like my $50 back. What can I do? Thanks!

Additionally, the screen in my Macbook pro is now broken. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Hey there Kappy. Just wanted to let you know that I talked to Applecare today. They looked at my order, looked at the sales tax for my county, and saw that it was incorrect. He said he was gonna have the web team take a look to figure out what went wrong. Anyway, he was unable to issue a refund so he got me to a supervisor (without me asking), and they not only offered to refund the $48ish that they had accidentally overcharged me, but they also gave me a $200 credit for the Apple store because they said it was a very serious issue.

So Apple has done a great job of taking care of me, and I am very pleased. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for you people on the forums. For those who said I was wrong about my own tax rate... sorry, I was right. For those who yelled at me for posting, don't worry I won't be back. And for those who posted legitimate help, thanks and I appreciate it a ton!

As for you Kippy, this isn't my main user name on this site (I wasn't gonna use my main username because I know once you accuse Apple of anything you fanboys start going CRAZZZZYYYY!), in fact you've helped me out quite a few times before. I thank you for your help. I know you do a lot to help out people on these forums. Yesterday when I called you "Skippy" I was trying to make light of the situation, but that didn't seem to make you any less angry. Anyways, I apologize for any immaturity on my part, but in the future I still stand by my point. If you don't know the answer then just don't answer. I don't need you to post and say "we can't help." Because I knew somebody would have an opinion.

Thanks again for all your guys's help. I must say I'm really enjoying my first Macbook pro! You'll not see me on these forums again (at least not with this username!!) Again Kappy, sorry!

Contact Apple - try either Telephone Sales or Customer Relations. If that fails, contact a lawyer or file a suit in Small Claims Court.

Define 'broken'. Any suggestions we could make will require a bit more detail from you...

The IRS doesn't care about sales tax since they have nothing to do with it. Even if they did, they aren't concerned with people paying too much tax - they can get a refund if they just ask (but not for sales tax), they care only about evasion.

In Minnesota, sales taxes vary from 6.5% (the flat state tax) to 10%. However, on July 1, the state sales tax increases 0.375% and several counties and towns also increase their local sales taxes at the same time. Apple will charge the tax that's due at the time of delivery (rather than at the time of purchase). So, if you're expecting your order to come in on or after July 1, that probably explains the discrepancy.

Good point... BUT The Macbook was already delivered, PLUS even if that was the case (that they're charging me the new rate), they are still overcharging me by over a percent. Yes it was wrong of me to mention the IRS, I'm probably better off contacting the state sales tax office. I called Apple yesterday and couldn't even get someone that spoke English, so maybe I'll have better luck today.

Your state sales tax agency isn't going to care that you've paid too much — they'd only care if you hadn't paid enough.

Is it possible that another town or city in Minnesota has a name similar to your town's, and is located in a county that has an 8.25% sales tax? That would explain the error very simply and innocently, eliminating any need to blather on about Apple "stealing" your $50.

Call Apple Customer Relations at 1-800-767-2775, and explain the error calmly and politely. Treat it as the unintentional slip-up that it undoubtedly was, and you'll make out a lot better than if you rant and rage about being robbed and victimized.

As for your "broken" screen, if you broke it, your warranty won't cover that. If it broke on its own in normal use, it should be covered by your warranty. Don't do anything at all to try to fix it yourself, because you may very well invalidate your warranty that way. Take it to an Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation, or telephone AppleCare at 1-800-275-2273.

Well my first contact with Applecare wasn't successful. Which is why I turned here in the first place. Apple should limit their support on weekends to technical support... because their customer care department on the weekends isn't so hot, I'd rather just be greeted with a message to call back on a weekday. Anyways, yes your advice was good, but from my perspective after just getting off the phone with Applecare, do you really think I just wanted to hear somebody tell me to call them again?

Again, I'm fully sorry for any personal comments I made against you, I'm sure you're a great guy and I know you help tons of people here! But I still stand by my principles.

BTW, my screen isn't actually broken, I just posted that here so the mods wouldn't delete it as off topic again. If they want to delete it now I don't really care since Kappy and I are good and since my problem is resolved.
