Image Capture and Brother all in one printer...help!

Hello,

I have a Brother all-in-one printer MFC-420CN. I just upgraded from a PC to a Mac. Almost everything works perfectly...I can print (wirelessly or not), send faxes, and scan using Brother's own Control Center utility. However, I wanted to use the printer also with Image Capture. I downloaded the scanner driver from the Brother site, however when I start image capture I get the message "No Image Capture device connected". If I go to Devices => Browse Devices, I can actually see the printer driver shown as TWAIN Data Sources/Brother Twain, however it doesn't show as being connected. If I click on the "Use Twain UI" button, it brings up a Brother Twain window, but if I click Scan nothing happens. Does anyone know why the mac can see the driver but thinks it's disconnected? Also, under "kind" there's a swirly icon, but I don't know what it means (sorry, Apple newbie).

Thanks!
GC

If the printer is connected via Ethernet then you may need to use the Brother utility installed in the /Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/ folder to select the type of connection and provide the printer's IP address.

I have a 290C model that is not networked and seems to do fine for printing and scanning from its direct USB connection. I did install all the latest drivers from Brother including TWAIN.

If you continue having trouble I suggest contacting Brother's tech support.

Interestingly here is what I received from Brother. (Note that scanning using the Control Center works fine.):

Dear Brother Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

Is your machine able to scan using the Brother ControlCenter software?

If you are able to scan with the ControlCenter, the drivers are
installed and working properly.

Your issue is with Apple's Image Capture software and should be referred
to them for support.

When you open the Apple software, you will need to click DEVICES in the
Menu Bar, then select the disclosure triangle next to TWAIN devices to
reveal the Brother TWAIN device.

Select the Brother TWAIN and click OK.

You should now be able to scan with Apple's Image Capture application.

For any additional assistance with the Apple application, we suggest you
contact Apple for assistance.

We hope this information will be useful to you. If we can be of further
assistance, please let us know.

So, who owns the problem: Brother or Apple? If I go to the Apple Store I see Canon and HP scannners for sale but not Brother. Maybe that is part of the problem. Corporate relations between Brother and Apple.

I should note that Image Capture->Devices->Browse Devices...->TWAIN Data Sources

shows "Brother TWAIN" but the column marked Connected is blank. This seems to be true whether the MFC is powered on or not. The Brother TWAIN connection is definitely invisible to Image Capture. The question is why & what to do about it?

"Use TWAIN UI" in the "Image Capture Device Browser" brings up a dialog box to set file format and download locations. There's a "Scan..." button that doesn't seem to work.

VueScan says:

"No scanner was found attached to your computer. If you have one, close this tip window, exit VueScan, turn on the scanner and run VueScan again."

Which is consistent with what Image Capture thinks.

I ran Brother "Device Selector.app" again and set the scanner to its mDNS service name instead of it's IP address. I reran VueScan and got the same result.

My theory is that the Device Selector app from Brother isn't working for some reason. It should register the network-connected MFC. The dialog box allows you to set the scanner for Network or USB connection. If set to Network you can set the IP address or the mDNS service name.

I would give some thought to just reinstalling OS X as well as the Brother software. BTW, I don't recall if this was mentioned already but have you tried connecting the printer directly to your Mac via USB to see if it works that way? At least to determine if the problem persists even when connected as a basic USB printer.

I am having the EXACT problems as mentioned in the previous messages. AND I am connected via USB port to my Mac. I am using a Brother MFC-7420 All-In-One.

I don't believe reinstalling OSX & Brother Drivers will resolve the issue when it sounds like it is a common issue - probably with BROTHER.

*+VUESCAN does not recognize the machine at all either.+* I've have thoroughly reviewed the Release Notes as the error message indicates and there doesn't seem to be a resolution either.

Ok, glad I am not the only one with the issue (though, sorry so many are having it). I installed Snow Leopard and now image capture won't even list the Twain drivers in the devices list! Not that it worked before, but at least it listed it.

Snow Leopard also didn't like ControlCenter, so it removed it, but I reinstalled it and it seems to work ok (gave me a few errors in the beginning but then started working again...go figure). It seems that the driver is subpar if its own Brother software works, but Apple's image capture doesn't.

Right...?

What kind of problems did you have at first?

surprisingly, control center installs. Then, after the reboot, it launches well (from Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/ControlCenter), then launches the scan physically (the snanner lights on and moves, until finish).
Then, the control center starts taking all CPU resource, the fan goes up to 6,000+ a minute, and nothing happens... no file is created.

Was your "few errors in the beginning" something like that?

What did you do next?

Okay, so at first Snow Leopard had uninstalled it. So, I reinstalled it, however when I tried control center and hit the scan button it would give me an error that it couldn't communicate with the MFC. So, I uninstalled it, connected my MBP to an ethernet cable to the router, and reinstalled it. When the setup came up, I entered the IP address of the printer. Then I tried to scan while on Ethernet and it worked. I disconnected the ethernet cable and it kept on working afterwards on wi-fi. Not sure if it's one specific thing or a combination of things that made it work 🙂

After installing SnowLeopard, I have the same problem. I cannot scan from my Brother MFC-7420, however I can open the printer/scanner dialogue in System Preferences and scan from the computer. Unfortunately it requires the original to feed through from the top. Using Leopard, my scans were always jpegs but using SnowLeopard I get tiff files. I have not looked at any settings yet.

I had a similar problem. After installing Snow Leopard, I reinstalled using the CD's that came with my brother mfc 7820N. I did a custom install and deselected the cups printer driver option and the twain option. Control worked fine. I noticed the high CPU clocks with control center running too. When I deselected the "start on computer startup" option in control center and restarted controlcenter, the high cpu clock went away.

I have similar issues with my Brother DCP 7020 (connected via USB).
Installed and reinstalled the latest Brother drivers for SL.

I can print w/o problems. I can scan using the Brother Control Center.

However, Image Capture creates problems. The scanner appears, it scans the previews and shows the preview scan on the screen. When I hit the final Scan, it will run the scan, but there is *no scan file created*.

It doesn't sound like a Brother TWAIN driver issue to me. I think something is borked with the Image Capture app.
