Signature Prefs: Stuck on 'NONE'

I have no signature option in Mail because the signature preferences have a Choose Signature bar at the bottom, but mine's grayed out. It's stuck on none. I have no way of selecting the default signature.
What to do?

It could be that the file SignaturesByAccount.plist is corrupt and might be the reason you can't get your signatures working. What you could do is close Mail, delete the files that are in the folder ~/Library/Mail/Signatures then launch Mail again and see if you can create your signatures. Mail will recreate the SignaturesByAccount.plist when you create your signature(s).

When you open Finder click on your "home" icon on the left sidebar (the one with the little house). The click on Library then Mail then Signatures

The character "~" when used on these Discussions in the format ~/Library/Mail/Signatures is effectively a shorthand version of /Users/<yourusername>. So rather than listing the folder as /Users/<yourusername>/Library/Mail/Signatures it is simpler to use ~/Library/Mail/Signatures

I, too, ran into this problem after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I had other email issues with Mail after the upgrade (wouldn't send/received, would close immediately after I sent a reply). Apple helped me fix the mail issues, but later found I couldn't get the "signatures: NONE" drop-down to activate (my signatures were never lost, I just couldn't get them to work). I followed Daniel's and 2point5's advice and it worked perfectly. Thanks!
