AIM vs Mac.com for ichat av

One question I have never asked.

Those who have ichat av working flawlessly - Do you use an AIM account or a mac.com account?

I have requested a Linksys RTP300 from Vonage, which not only does the QOS, but uses ports 10000-2000 for its stuff. Of course, iChat uses 16000- so, who knows how well this is going to work.

Has anyone mentioned this port nonsense needs to change? 🙂

Hi Steven,

Apple have specifically chosen an internet protocol for Voice over the internet to get iChat to connect to other people.

This Protocol is SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). It is alos used by VoIP services like Vonage.

Unfortunately some modems come in a default state Aware of SIP and look for a phone to connect to rather than any application on a computer.

The first thing to try is to move the Vonage adaptor to the same level as the computer.

Normal set up
Modem <-> Adaptor <-> Computer

You need
Modem <-> Router <-> Computer and adpator

If the modem is SIP Aware then you may need to UnBind SIP from port 5060 to allow it to go to any device.
Info on SIP http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_text and instructions on how to telnet into your modem and instruct the unbinding.

Thanks, but I really just wanted to know if people use AIM or mac.com who have had successes. 🙂

I have a Motorola SB 5100 modem. It refuses all telnet connections.

The interesting thing about this new MTA is that it uses 10000-20000 for SIP, not 5060/5061. Not sure about 5190.

Right now my network looks like:

SB5100 Modem ->Linksys WRT54GS (Talisman) -> Motorola VT1000 MTA/Router

SB5100 Modem ->Linksys WRT54GS (Talisman) ->Gigabit Switch->Macs/PCs

ie the router/MTA is behind the Linksys, as is the switch.

Also, I had problems with my brother just going directly to the modem. But the problem with this mess is that he has a router on his end also.

The real annoying bit is this all works if we just boot under Panther. I'm pi$$ed off at Apple by now.

Hello Steven,

I use a full .mac account for iChat AV and the only time i ran into a problem was after a hack upgrade that damaged my framework files requiring a reinstall (the hard way).

everything else (except my cable modem) is all MAC. the cable modem was supplied by the cable company and is a Terayon model: TJ715X which connects to my Airport Extreme Base Station via Ethernet. My G5 is connected wirelessly through an airport extreme card. For initial set up, i connected the modem directly to what was then a G4.

I added the iSight cam about 6 months ago and it was plug and play. no kidding, no problems with the one exception some mac/pc issues, but on the pc end. I am not bragging for those that might get jelous. you asked.

any questions or is this just a survey?

I went all mac for this reason. not to say the other configs will not work, but i just decided that apple test things with apple hardware.

the third party stuff can be so many and the combinations could be great. i could not see apple testing other peoples hardware/software to work with apple stuff.

From my point a view, it was expensive to do, but looking at the many issues, it was the smart play for me. The PC issue is another issue and i wish it was easier to track down and fix.

remeber, video chat is still in the wild west days, so it may take awhile to get it all worked out.

Cheers
