Jabber and Yahoo gateways

Having a problem using Jabber and a Yahoo gateway. I set up an account (using Psi) and that was successful. I can chat with others using Psi just fine. But when I set up iChat to do this it recognizes my account, logs me in but when I open a chat with a Yahoo buddy I see them typing but the message never appears. My Yahoo Messenger and Psi work just fine but iChat is a no go 😟 I've tried creating a new Jabber account (with Psi) same results. Tried it on 2 different computers - iBook G4 and 933 mhz QuickSilver G4. Same results. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Mike,

I'm having the same problem. I've tried using several different Jabber servers and have only been able to get a message to come through from Yahoo! once - that was using the jabber.org.uk server. When I tried to use it last night it failed in the way you described above.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer - just writing to commiserate.

Does anyone have a clue as to why iChat is unable to accepts messages from Yahoo! through Jabber Yahoo! gateway when Psi is able to receive messages just fine?

Thanks,

...Jamie

Strange.

I'm still having the same problem with the server you recommended. I'm wondering if there is something that I'm not configuring correctly in Psi or iChat.

Just to reiterate the issue:
I can sign up for a Jabber account,
configure it using Psi (loading the yahoo and msn gateways),
Log out of Psi,
Register the Jabber account in ichat and log in,

What works:
The contacts appear in my iChat Jabber list,
Those that are online appear online
I can send a message out to the contact

What doesn't work:
Receiving incoming chats from buddies
Receiving replies to chats that I've initiated

Actions I've taken so far:
Enabled port 5222 and 5223 on UDP and TCP
I've tried with SSL activated and deactivated

Any other ideas or recommendations for servers that are working?

Thanks,

...Jamie

Ok. Just got it to work again on jabber.org.uk

It seems that it was something related to re-authorization of contacts.

In Psi, I removed buddies from the list, removed the yahoo transport and re-registered the service. It gave me umpteen authorization requests for each buddy) actually 3 😉.

I logged out of Psi and re-enabled the jabber.org.uk profile in iChat and logged in using SSL on port 5223.

I was able to send out a message to a buddy and get a reply.
I was able to receive an incoming message initiated by my buddy.

I would describe it as working but not yet stable as it's only been working for about 5 minutes.

Can anyone else shed some light on why this is so unstable?

Thanks,

Last post as I wait to see if it stays stable.

I re-read the directions on a forum site and found something that could be the culprit. Obviously, I'll need to wait a bit to see if the problem is resolved.

In my latest attempt (again, using the jabber.org.uk server) I removed the yahoo and msn transports and re-registered them. I authorized the gateways, BUT

I did NOT authorize the contacts individually. I left the little blinking icons and logged out of Psi and logged into iChat.

This caused authorization messages to pop up for each contact in iChat. The contacts appeared in the list and this time instead of showing their Jabber ID, they displayed the shortened yahoo ID (janedoe@yahoo.com instead of janedoe@yahoo.jabber.org.uk).

I'm hoping that this will keep my authorization from timing out.

Thanks for all the tips here! I finally got the Yahoo portals working after messing with them for 2 days. The key for me was authorizing the yahoo portal in Psi before closing it and opening iChat.. If I didn't do this, I didn't see all my old yahoo buddies show up.

I wrote a little script that goes through your entire address book and for anyone that has "yahoo" (e.g. joe@yahoo.com) in their email address, it adds an appropriate jabber yahoo gateway address using jabber.org.uk (e.g. joe@yahoo.jabber.org.uk). You should modify the script if you're using a different gateway:
http://nat.myphotos.cc/jabber_handles.scpt

should be relatively easy to modify for MSN accounts and hotmail if they're the same thing. I'm not sure since I never use MSN.

Fixing one thing breaks something else.

I'm closer to getting Yahoo to work, but not quite yet. When using jabber.freenet.de I can register on Yahoo, and my Yahoo buddies show up in iChat, and my messages in iChat generally get through to my buddies (7 or 8 out of ten messages, anyway), but I never see the responses in iChat. Psi works great all around.

Re. MSN: I had that working well when using njs.netlab.cz for Jabber/iChat,, but jabber.freenet.de won't even allow me to register for the MSN transport. Too bad I couln't get both jabber.freenet.de and njs.netlab.cz to work at the same time, one for Yahoo, one for MSN.

I've tried that and it always says that it is up (as of right now it says AIM is off but yahoo is up)

when I try to register I see 2 "XMPPY Yahoo Transport (Dev)"
yahoo.jabber.org.uk
and
yahoo.dev.jabber.org.uk

When I try to register for either I get

"Unable to retrieve registration form
reason: "

I've got simmalr responses with diff jabber clients. Does any one know of another server? Or maybe they can tell me what I'm doing wrong.
