Best full PIM software?

What do people use for their personal info management needs on Macs? Google turns up a lot of software packages but I haven't found any good user opinions yet.

iCal does calendaring, and very elementary todo list. The Address Book takes care of the contact list issue. But what about more complex todo lists and also general notes?

I come from Palm Desktop for Windows which has Contacts, Todo List, Notes, and Calendar. I like iCal and Address Book.app great, but I really need the other features. I also need it to sync with my Visor. I have Palm Desktop for the Mac but it clearly did not get enough attention during development. The display doesn't use nice fonts and the printing templates are extremely primitive. What other recommendations are there?

Thanks for the feedback and insights. I really appreciate it. I had played around with Palm Desktop a little bit, but I'll have to give it another look. One thing that threw me last time was that it appeared you couldn't add a note to a task (which you can do in other apps or even in the pda itself.) Am I missing something?

Thanks again for all the help,
Clayton

Indeed you are missing something. Palm DT does a nice job keeping things organized (IMHO) and once you understand it's system I think you'll like it (bearing in mind I doubt it's going to be around forever).

In Palm one "attaches" a note (they call it a "memo") to anything (or everything). Rather than clutter every task, event or address with a large note field, you simply attach a memo if you need one. For example, I would attach a memo with directions to an appointment. One could even attach files to the task, event, etc., such as a map saved from MapQuest. Or maybe the KeyNote presentation you are going to give.

All this makes me want to go back to Palm; if only they would keep developing it... But I do think it might be a good short term solution for you, especially how you are coming from Palm on the PC side. I still use it as my old data is still there, but once something better comes along I'll need to move on. I expect that will be fairly soon.

You might also want to take a closer look at DayLite as it seems quite robust though relatively expensive. But if you rely on your PIM to make you money DayLite has a good solution. But not fully integrated at this point and not sure if they are heading in that direction.

Good luck.

Wow, so much information here. I'm sorry I wasn't involved with this discussion while it was still happening; despite subscribing to the thread, I never got an email from Apple saying there had been posts, so I never came back to look. I just happened to login and check my subscriptions...

Anyway, thanks for all the info everyone, esp. Dancin Brook. I've actually come up with a different solution: I've just done everything on my todo list. Literally. It used to have over 250 items, it now has 5. And I've been diligent about only adding things that really needed to be there.

So for now I'm sticking with Palm Desktop, for lack of need to really make any decision at all. There was a GTD app I read about today called Kinkless - http://kinkless.com/ - that was well recommended (from 43 Folders) but they have some note about not downloading it yet or something... those with a need can see for themselves 🙂. The best part is it's free, which would be necessary for me if I were to get something.

Cheers

Off the top of my head I clump things into 4 categories;

1. Apple Apps and this includes using SB to fill in the notes bit.
2. Less than "full value"; and here goes Palm Desktop (you can't be serious..;-)) and Chronos.
3. Apps that aren't really PIM's at all (they are CRM's); here go DayLite and Radlean Account Executive, etc al); and,
4. Entourage (quiet at the back, please....;-)) Really, MSE is the real "eight-hundred-pound-gorilla" of the PIM community. MSE has absolutely everything (except for being radical, different, etc; or even being liked) going for it - there are many tools to sync it with Apple Apps/.Mac and for Palm/PocketPC integration. It has a nifty Project function as well. The truth is that if PIM os at the core of your workflow then Entourage really does it.

The support community is pretty poor though, so a decent handbook is well recommended.

And to follow on from the Proect Management mini-thread; my money is on "Merlin"
