How to ship/mail a MacBook Pro

Hello,

I have a MacBook Pro that I bought two years ago this month. I am going to be travelling soon and, rather than take my MBP with me, I'll need to mail it ahead. What is the best packaging and carrier you recommend? I've seen that FedEx/Kinkos has "laptop boxes", and I have the packaging my computer originally came in as well. Once it's boxed up, I'm unsure to go with USPS, UPS, FedEx -- does one have a better reputation over another for handling computers? (Regardless, I'll be sure to do a full backup first, and then to insure the package!)

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you,

-Ken

Fedex and UPS only insure for weight, not for replacement.

They do not 'insure' at all. They are responsible for what you declare as the 'maximum declared value' of the shipment. You need to declare the value and pay the associated costs, or else you just get the basic $100 coverage. You pay something a bit under $1 for every additional $100 of declared value, over the first $100.

From FedEx: +"With respect to FedEx Express Freight services, unless a higher value is declared and paid for, our liability for each piece (single handling unit) is limited to US$100 or US$1 per pound, whichever is greater. When the declared value exceeds the greater of US$100 or US$1 per pound per shipment, an additional amount will be charged for each US$100 (or fraction thereof) of additional declared value. See Rates in the FedEx Service Guide for details."+

If your " la zers " (thinking you mean something out of an Austin Powers movie) got waylaid, but you had declared the value of them at the time of shipping and paid the associated charges, you would have been compensated for that declared value.
