Which video format for iMovie HD 6?

I've recorded video on two separate digital cameras (not camcorders). On my older Fuji, I record videos on the SD memory card then import those videos into iMovie. These videos are in the .dv format (according to the info provided when I hit Apple-I). These videos import and play with no problem and I'm able to edit them normally in iMovie.

Taking videos with my new Canon Powershot SX10IS is great but I can't import them to iMovie. iMovie won't accept .MOV clips. I downloaded a free video converter, MPEG Streamclip, and converted a .MOV clip to .dv then MPEG4 then .AVI. iMovie wouldn't take any of them, indicating there wasn't enough space left. There is tons of space everywhere on my laptop.

So which format should I convert TO in order to import and edit clips in iMovie HD 6?

If these converted clips are too big, how do I make them smaller?

It seems there are few options when buying a digital camera that shoots video for ease of use in actually viewing, importing, and editing the videos. Every brand of camera seems to use a different format and it seems like the user is always instructed to convert that format. But convert to what and will it work?

Any insight to this issue is so much appreciated. It seems as if the more forums I read the more variety of answers I get. No one seems to agree on which formats Macs accept.

Thanks to anyone for help!

catspaw,

I wish it were so for me. iMovie simply will not accept any file fromthe Canon. I read everywhere on Mac forums that miniDV is the way to go. But the Fuji stores files on an SD card and works brilliantly. Besides, why would I buy a new camcorder when the Canon digital camera takes really good video.

Let's say, for sake of argument, I were to buy a new camcorder and I DO NOT want the miniDV format. What are the best options for a Mac user? Should I simply upgrade to iLife '09 for the latest iMovie? And wouldn't I need Leopard for that? It all seems like way too much frustration but I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks!

Hi vbo - I still belive that you should be able to import your movie file from the camera onto your computer desktop, or into iPhoto, and from there drag it into the imovie HD Timeline.

However, a camcorder will give you much better quality with more features than any still camera's video function, so if you are becoming serious about making videos, that would definitely be the way to go. I still use miniDV cameras - one is Hi Definition, so I am not the best person to advise you on other alternatives. If you choose a camera that records in AVCHD then you need an intel-based machine. By your profile info, you already have Leopard. iMovie 09 would be your best choice if you do not want to use miniDV.

Catspaw and QuickTimeKirk,

Thanks for all the insight. Yes, I've converted the file to DV then tried to put that file into iMovie with no luck. Error message indicated there wasn't enough space. Again, there isn't much on my laptop. I try to keep all applications lean. Besides, the clip is only about 30 seconds which isn't encouraging for future clips of greater duration.

I will try again. I can't remember if I tried to put the file on the desktop and I know I didn't try to get it into iPhoto before importing to iMovie.

I already have Leopard? Cool. I can never keep the numerical versions in line with the animal names Apple gives things.

Again, thanks for the advice!
