Call Waiting Tone

Why is it that when someone calls me and I'm currently on a call, the party I'm talking to can hear the call waiting tone? I don't think this was an issue in previous software revisions (1.x), but it certainly is now(2.x+). When in a conference call or other important phone call, this is very obnoxious.

I too am experiencing this problem. I called AT&T and they passed me to apple who said the same thing. You know how annoying it is to tell the caller you on the phone with that its not their call waiting? Then having to explain why Im not answering the other line??

Do you have the 3GS? I didnt experience it on my 2G running 3.0 so Im wondering if it is a 3GS handset issue..

Yes I have the 3GS. I'm first time with an iPhone and with AT&T. No tliking this too much. Also my Voice command will turn on where ever it feels and starts the iPod. Happens when I'm on the phone with headsets and just disconnect my call. If it's not being bothered say on a table or anything it will do the same. I just start hearing music play and watch it jump back and forth between Voice Command screen and iPod screen. Apple told me to reboot and Restore. If this doesn't work I'm taking it in.

Ok so I heard back from ATT. And guess what ATT doesn't have the capability of transmitting the call waiting tone to the person your talking to. It just doesn't exist in their network, you get a second call you hear the beep only. I knew this but i had to wait the 4 days to hear back from them. After ATT called me I instantly called Apple and they transferred the call to a product specialist who did some trouble shooting steps with me and I recreated the problem every time he called with his other line. He said he collected as much data as he could and that he was going to send it up to engineering. They would call me back in 5 business days to explain if its a feature that was intended for the phone or a bug that they are working on. Lets see.

Yes! I am quite annoyed. I know for a fact that this broadcasted call waiting is not an AT&T issue. Amidst AT&T's numerous shortcomings, the iPhone is the only phone has this issue. My brother has a Blackberry and I never know when he receives calls nor about any other friend of mine who subscribes to AT&T, but since day 1 with this phone, EVERYBODY seems to know when I get a call. By the way this is common with the 3G as well as 3GS. Can't speak for the 2G. I can hear when all my iPhone friends receive a call.

I guess I don't understand why this is a big deal. If you're calling someone with call waiting, you can often hear a slightly different ring tone that tells you the line you're calling is already engaged. And if you're talking with someone whose line is called while it is engaged with you, you can often hear changes in the quality of the background noise, and even a short interruption of sound, that betray the call waiting. So it's no big secret what's going on.

I just called Apple on the Call Waiting Tone issue. They conferenced AT&T as well. Once AT&T Support got on the phone, I called my cell phone from another line and they did not hear the call waiting tone. Once I plugged my wired headset that came with the phone they could hear it. The Apple tech took over the issue and created a ticket # and he will follow up in the next 3-5 business days.

For those who think that this is not an issue, I use my iPhone to make client calls and it is annoying to them. Also, I attend a lot of conference calls weekly and I prefer to use the headset for handsfree operation. Everyone on the conference call would hear the call waiting tone as well. Not good, this is an issue for me!.

I am switching to speaker phone for now. I tried my BlueTrek stereo bluetooth headset and the issue does not happen. I will keep everyone posted on my conversation with apple.

i called in this issue as well, AT&T suggested a new SIM card. I went to AT&T, new SIM, no change. I called APPLE and explained what i tried. they claim the tone is random in which iphones that get affected. They offered to exchange my phone, but since i am not near an apple store, they wanted $29. I did not think it was fear to penalize me because why could they not authorize the exchange at my local AT&T store. For now, i turn off call waiting.

This call waiting beep that the other party can hear is extremely annoying. When on a phone with a client they ask, do you want to get that, or is that your call waiting or mine etc… EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL. Here is what I came up with. It is not a problem with the sim nor the network, but rather the firmware or the phone, some iphones you can faintly hear it some you can definitely hear it, also seems that if it were faint the more apps or the more you use the phone the tone gets louder in due time.

I have a 32gb iphone 3gs unlocked (from overseas) and one 32gb 3gs locked to the AT&T network here yes 2 phones hence 2 sampling methods. If you put your AT&T sim into another phone not an Iphone the beep is no longer there (I put it in my nokia n97, n95, sony erricson, tried it with almost every phone I had). I had the AT&T store swap 3 of my sims and the genius bar swap my phone 3 times, now I’m annoyed and would rather use the phone as an Ipod. I put in my T-Mobile sim and same issue, other person can hear the stupid call waiting beep.

I believe it’s an issue with the firmware, or actual hardware of the iphone 3gs as I don’t recall having this issue when I had the 1st gen phone.

Please someone help!

First of all this is a big deal because if you get a lot of calls in a day, this issue becomes a major annoyance. I get a ton of calls (use about 5300 min per month). I'd say 1 in every 2 conversations have at least 1 call-waiting beep in. Sometimes 2 or 3.

I have adopted the technique of hitting ignore but if I hit it too quickly, the person calling will think the call never made it to my phone, and sometimes tries again. I believe all iphones do this. Does anyone have 2 phones, one that does and one that doesn't do this? I probably know 10 friends with iphones, 3G and 3GS and they all experience this (not all of them notice it).

Perhaps apple will design a solution for this in 4.0? If the client couldn't hear the beep, it wouldn't be so bad. I have to constantly tell them that its not their call-waiting, its mine.

I have a 3Gs and my spouse has a 3G. I have this same problem, but my spouse doesn't. I also HAD a 3G and never had this problem when I had the 3G. I recently went into AT&T and swapped my sim card with other phones in the store (display and one that belonged to a rep) and the problem went away. This leads me to believe the problem is with the phone. I received a new phone from apple care today and the problem is GONE!!!

I have to say that until I read your response I had never used a 3GS that did not have this problem. This included: My brothers, My business partner's, My mother and fathers. AFTER reading your post, I tested my GF's brand new phone (refurbished purchased on new years). AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT ON HER PHONE!!!!

This is excellent news. I'm gonna try to get apple to replace mine for this reason next week!!!!!

WOOOOHOOOOO!
