using Safari 4 to manage Linksys WRT300n router

I tried to use Safari to change settings in the Linksys router setup. When I click "Save Settings", an error page is displayed that says Safari cannot connect. Firefox works properly on both Mac and PC, a page is displayed that says "Setting were successful" with a button to continue.

Any idea if something is configured incorrectly in Safari? I'm connected to the router via ethernet. The router has the latest firmware and is serving about 10 clients via ethernet and wireless.

It could be that Linksys setup that web-based system assuming that the only users were Windoze people, which means they may not have created it to be standards-compliant. But if you can do it in Firefox, that's because it's the second most popular browser on Windoze, so not supporting that would be a good way to antagonize Windoze users.

Try opening the Preferences>Advanced window in Safari and activate the Develop menu. Then go to that item in the menu bar and select a different User Agent to see if you can access it that way from Safari and get the confirmation message at the end.

Where you able to figure it out? I am running into the same problem. I have At&t uverse that comes with a router that runs G. I want to run N from the Linksys but everytime I choose to save the setting, i do too get the same dropped connection error message. There is not way that I could have dropped connection because I can instantly log onto a different page.

I am having the same problem at a friend's house, an error page stating the "connection was dropped" after clicking the "save settings" button on any router configuration page. In this case, the router is a Linksys WRT54G (v8) router connected via ethernet cable to an iMac running 10.5.7 and Safari 4.0.1. I also have a Windows PC on this network, so I tried it from there, and it worked fine, with both IE7 and Safari 3.x. So, I'm thinking it's something on the Mac end, until, that is, I decided to update Safari on the PC from 3.x to 4.x. After I did, I could no longer save settings on the router using Safari! IE still worked OK. I tried changing the User Agent settings in the Develop menu to no avail. At this point, I'm nearly convinced that this is a Safari 4.x problem. (The only reason I'm hesitating at all is that I have another network at another location with nearly identical hardware and software, and am not experiencing the problem there, even with Safari 4.x. The only difference is that the router at that location is a Linksys WRT54GS (v6) with Speedbooster). In retrospect, I used to have no trouble configuring the router from the Mac. The problem appeared fairly recently, probably after updating Safari. I hope this helps someone figure out the problem (Safari developers, are you reading this?) 🙂

I have the same problem. I can access the router but cannot save any changes - says dropped connection.

"Safari can’t open the page “ http://192.168.1.1/apply.cgi” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again."

I have tried with block popups unticked in case it was that and empty cache / reset safari

I would almost guarantee this is a Safari 4 issue I have another mac connected to the same linksys wrt54gs router but have not upgraded it to S4 it is on S3.2.1 and the problem does not occur.

If those looking at this could think about looking into and fixing Safai 4

Not true in my experience. I can (and always have been able to) configure my WRT54GS router using Safari 4.x on my iMac with no problems. But on another iMac I cannot configure a WRT54G with Safari 4.x. I could configure either router with Safari 3.x on both systems. And I could configure either router running Safari 3.x on a PC, until I upgraded to 4.x, then it failed.

No intention of starting a vendor war, just hard personal experience ....

Ran various models Linksys routers for years on a mixed Mac/Windoze network. The first Linksys firmware update after Cisco bought them, all sorts of weird issues with the Macs randomly losing their network connection. Based on discussion at this site, I replaced Linksys with D-Link and have had zero issues since.

I to get the same message trying to make changes to the WRT300n router. I can get it to work with Opera but not Safari 4.0.2. This issue did not exist with 4.0 or 4.0.1. I am current on all updates and have the latest versions of the firmware on the router.

It would be nice to get apple support to investigate the issue. For those of us that prefer to use Safari over other browsers would like to see these types of issues be resolved. So far for me this is the only bug that I have seen from safari. There are applications I use at work that run better on Safari for windows they the do on Firefox or IE even though they were built to use IE. But as with any browser they all have there issues.

Thanks every one so far for their suggestions. Hope someone might have a suggestion on things to try other than try a new browser. I have reset safari. I have not attempted to roll back to a previous version yet as I am fond of 4.x feature set. Will post if I do.

Same here. Safari 4.0.2 definitely introduced a bug. I'm getting the same issue with ANY Linksys management page. Instant connection dropped. Also experiencing the same issue with various other websites (not as frequently), most notably, Facebook. Hopefully Apple corrects this, because I hate using Firefox if I don't have to. >.<

EDIT: I should note that Safari 4.0.1 never resulted in this issue, as I frequently am managing my router's config.

I don't have any browsers installed now that fail with Linksys web config except Safari (4.x?)

Firefox works. Camino works. Even other WebKit browsers, such as OmniWeb, work.

So, in the meantime…

It's no big deal to keep another browser besides Safari on your drive. I sometimes run into something on a site that doesn't quite work right in my favorite browser, and I just switch over for a while.

This is more of a problem for Linksys, and for Apple, than it is for experienced users.
