I am having the same problem at a friend's house, an error page stating the "connection was dropped" after clicking the "save settings" button on any router configuration page. In this case, the router is a Linksys WRT54G (v8) router connected via ethernet cable to an iMac running 10.5.7 and Safari 4.0.1. I also have a Windows PC on this network, so I tried it from there, and it worked fine, with both IE7 and Safari 3.x. So, I'm thinking it's something on the Mac end, until, that is, I decided to update Safari on the PC from 3.x to 4.x. After I did, I could no longer save settings on the router using Safari! IE still worked OK. I tried changing the User Agent settings in the Develop menu to no avail. At this point, I'm nearly convinced that this is a Safari 4.x problem. (The only reason I'm hesitating at all is that I have another network at another location with nearly identical hardware and software, and am not experiencing the problem there, even with Safari 4.x. The only difference is that the router at that location is a Linksys WRT54GS (v6) with Speedbooster). In retrospect, I used to have no trouble configuring the router from the Mac. The problem appeared fairly recently, probably after updating Safari. I hope this helps someone figure out the problem (Safari developers, are you reading this?) 🙂
