Has anyone had a bad experience with this service? How does apple verify if you are actually a student?

I've used it a few times while studying for my associates degree. There is no verification (that I'm aware of). I was never contacted by Apple. I was never contacted by my school. I just picked my school and got the discount.

Did you buy something that required an internet rebate? Like the ipod touch that comes free with MBP. You're supposed to pay the full price and then get the money back via a online rebate. I'm just afraid something will go wrong and I end up paying the full price.
Last year I bought, through my local campus computer store (I am a college student) an iMac and an iPod touch with the rebate program. You purchase both at the same time, on the same receipt, and then mail in the UPCs of both products and a copy of the sales invoice. You will receive the education discount on the iMac of $100 and get the iPod touch cost back in the form of rebate.
It's a very straightforward process; I don't see how anything could go wrong.

I don't get it. Why doesn't everybody just say they are a college student and get the free ipod touch and 100$ discount if there's no verification...?
I didn't buy anything that required a rebate. I believe it was a Mac mini and a Mac Book Pro.

I am an educator and have used the discount whenever I purchased a new computer. Over the years they have handled it differently. When I bought online I got the discount but had to pay the tax. Another time we purchased an iMac at the store and they verified my teaching certificate through the state education website. I got the discount AND they exempted the tax. This past month I purchased my MBP at the Apple Store and they said I could get the discount OR the exempted tax but not both. I verified my teaching position through our school website. I went with the discount as it was more than the tax. Just make sure you ask (if buying at the store) when you go to purchase.
So, far everything has worked out well for me. I got around $200 off of my system and a free ipod touch. I am still waiting for my rebate but it was pretty easy to apply for. They say my rebate has been received and apple is currently processing it.
In the UK you need to be logging in through your University network to be able to access the education store which is how I assume they verify your academic status.
Not necessarily, you can access the education store over at http://store.apple.com/uk-edu .
I used my student discount to purchase a new 15 inch CTO MBP with the iPod Touch. I had to pay for the iPod Touch upfront with tax. You have to fill out the online form after you receive all the items and wait about 30 days for them to process it and mail it to you. Once I received my rebate I sold my new unused iPod touch as I have a 32 Gb 3Gs and don't see why I need to carry them both. I used the cash I got for it to help pay on the balance of the MBP.
That's exactly what I plan on doing with mine. I think my question is pretty much answered. I still don't understand why everybody doesn't just say they are a student and get the discount. Their loss I suppose. Thank you all for answering.
I guess that is true, but I bet Apple is just expecting the buyer to be honest about it.
I'm not sure what apple's official policy on it is. I would be wary about doing the rebate if I was not a student and risking it getting rejected and stuck with the iPod.
True. Good thing I am a student. Seems like there are no known issues if you are honest about your education status. Once again thank you all for answering. I'm going to buy my MBP now!
Basically all you're saving on the education discount is the tax. Apple offers the discount from it's site, and you can be a home schooler and get it. (taught your dog a new trick recently?) There are no verifications. If you feel uncomfortable, just walk into an Apple college store or center. The ones I've visited or purchased from have their prices already discounted to the education pricing level. The education pricing doesn't apply to all Apple products, e.g., you can't get an Apple TV at a discount.
