Power Adapter = Hot Potato.

Hello, as you can tell by the subject title, I'm having concerns with my G3 iBook's power adapter. The thing gets really hot, is this normal? I also heard about the adapter recall, does that include the G3 adapter?

Which adapter do you have?

They really do get quite warm, especially while charging the battery.

They wear out on occasion, and I like to have a spare on hand in case that happens. If you are concerned about your adapter, you may want to buy another in case that happens. I've worn out four adapters. It's also nice to have an extra for troubleshooting situations.

Upon doing a lot of searching, I have found the following options for replacing a white iBook power adapter:

MCE Technologies

MacAlly adapter at Buy.com

Apple's is the only one with the glowing ring, though, and is found here:

I believe the one from Other World Computing is the sturdiest of the lot. We've tried most of them. The one from MacResQ gave out after two years. The MacAlly one has a thinner cord, and it looks more fragile.

My iBook (12" white) adapter has also given up the ghost - it's model # is M8482 (45 watt). Apple don't make this model any more and I was told that it had been replaced by M8942 (65 watt). However, the only one I could find in the AppleStore is M8943 (which I notice your link, Ronda, points to). Question: is the M8943 the current replacement for the M8482? More to the point will it work okay with 65 watt output rather than 45 watt?

Thank you Ronda for your quick reply. Yes, I meant power adapter, and I think you are right, it doesn't fit.

I will take a look on your suggestions for third party replacement power adapters for M8482 in this threadas I will try to go for a 45W one and I understand that Apple is only doing 65W at the moment.

I have seen that everybody here identifies iBook (G3, white, two USB connections) as 500MHz, the system profile in my computer says 600 MHz, any of you reckon mine is a later version?

The iBook G3 dual USB came in 500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 MHz versions, depending on when it was manufactured.

I have a 500 MHz one, and also an 800 MHz version. My husband has a 500 MHz model.

MadsonLine makes the Generation Gap adapter which will let you use your old yo-yo adapter with your newer iBook. However, at $20 for the Generation Gap, it may be wise to go with a new third-party adapter for not much more money than the Generation Gap.

Why would you want to go with a 45-watt adapter? The 65-watt ones are absolutely fine for the iBook, and will most likely last longer (less strain on it) and charge your battery quicker.
