Update. The camera was not working for about two weeks. Every so often I would try it just in case. Then one day I was using the facebook app and clicked on the camera in fb. All of the sudden it started working - hooray! And it was working with the regular camera app as well. Then just earlier today it stopped working, but now is working again. I guess I'll have to live with some unpredictability. This was a used phone when I got it. How can one tell if the water sensor has been tripped? Do you have to visit and apple store? That's not an option for me - I live abroad.
i am having the same problem. last friday thursday my camera would just freeze(shutter not opening), then 5 min later the whole phone would crash. the only way to get it stated was a hard reset.
went to see the apple store in london and the staff were very unhelpful. not happy about the way i was spoken to (but thats another issue) and told to come back another day because the snow lepoard was released that day and they were closing early. I was in the store at 11:00am. not even that busy and no one even offered to look at the phone while i was there.
phone has had a full reset and no joy. the phone is still playing up and the camera is not working. very frustrated.
I have the same problem with my 3 month old 32GB 3GS. I am suspicious that one of the apps being installed might be causing it, and I might have to start a process of elimination. I have never got it wet, dropped it or anything like that. It works fine for quite a while and then suddenly it just starts playing up. Yesterday afternoon I took 2 photos and emailed them right from the app. Today, while my phone is still switched on from yesterday, I went to do it again. I took another 4 photos, emailed 1, and then went to take another one and the shutter button and the video/photo slider is greyed out. I restarted the phone and it worked once, then grey. I restarted again 3 more times and greyed out every time. Facebook photo buttons are also grey - even the cancel button in the 'take a photo' page. I tried taking screen shots in other apps as suggested but that doesn't work either.
There's no point saying 'restore your phone' every time this happens. That's not a fix.
Looking for a common denominator, the apps I have that utilise the camera are:
Red Laser, VidPix, U Broadcaster (only installed last week- this problem has been happening before this app was installed.
