You can buy a used keyboard from PowerBook Tech, but I believe I would contact them first and ask specifically about the smell.

I am getting a funky smell coming from my keyboard. I have cleaned the board with some canned air but it still stinks. It doesn't smell like anything burned but more like body odor (yeah, I know, "eww"). I keep my computer pretty clean and I bathe regularly, so I don't know what it can be. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The only way to replace the keyboard "on the cheap" is to buy a used one on eBay (or elsewhere), but you run the risk of someone selling their own stinky keyboard.

it's been over two months that there are no messages in this thread!
It can't just die !!
I am sure it is the oldest thread around. Is it over 3 years now?
I just want to remind you all to write.
By the way, my iBook has no smell whatsoever! At least for now!

This is not the oldest thread on Discussions, but it is probably the strangest.
Hi Ronda,
which one is the oldest? I am really curious.

The longest running thread in Apple Discussions is the
Half dimmed flat panel display thread in the Displays forum.
This one is the next oldest.
And in case you're wondering which thread is the longest, it's the Uneven illumination thread in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Aluminum) > Displays forum.
(Thanks to Niel for the statistics.)

Apple Discussions are running very slowly right now, and would not allow me to build workable links (at least, they aren't working when I test them out), so I will try again.

I hope the links take this time, but if they don't you can find the threads by searching for their titles in the Discussions search box.

You're welcome. Took me 45 minutes to get those links to work.
Well if everyone would quit bumpin' this stale post, it would die!
My iBook smells like electrons and I love the smell of them in the morning...

Jason,
It sounds like your iBook is doubling as on of those new fangled air filtration
devices like the kind Sharper Image sells. Somehow, rather than dispensing the
now infamous BO scent, your room's air is being replaced by clean ionized air.
Bravo!, kudos to Jason and Apple for this unexpected reward.

Of course, you do realize that you have just bumped this stale post?
Bump!
Ronda, I sure do but it was only 2 days post the last msg (kinda like this!), so not too big of a bump. I think it's time to bump into the whiskey...

I have plans on bumping up against a plate of turkey and all the trimmings in a few hours. The bird is in the oven and the house smells wonderful.
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

great, now I have to repace my smelly keyboard...does smell a bit like cury... but thanks to this
very informative thread, I know know why 😀. So how do I go about getting a new keyboard?
iBook G3 900, iMac DV Mac OS X (10.4.3)
iBook G3 900, iMac DV Mac OS X (10.4.3)
PowerBook Tech (used, be sure to inquire about the smell)
MicroDoc
Wegener Media
PB Fixit
PB Parts.com
I would ask any and all of these places whether the keyboard is new, or, if used, ask about it to make sure that it does not smell. It would be awful to buy a different keyboard and end up with another smelly one.
