ibook smell

I am getting a funky smell coming from my keyboard. I have cleaned the board with some canned air but it still stinks. It doesn't smell like anything burned but more like body odor (yeah, I know, "eww"). I keep my computer pretty clean and I bathe regularly, so I don't know what it can be. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thank you all!! I just found this thread. I have an almost three year old 800mhz iBook. My girlfriend used to always ask me if I had put on deoderant and would start sniffing me to my assurance tha I had and I shouldn't have BO. Well we finally put two together and realized it was when i was using my computer this smell would be smelt. I don't plan on buying a new keyboard or even cleaning it, but now I have some defense for when people may wonder about an odor they smell!

Well I need to replace my keyboard again. Second one that smells like curry & armpits. I tried removing the sticker and cleaning off the adhesive with a QTip and alcohol, it helped a bit but it still lingers. My office complains about the smell so I have to use my windoze box.

This is a real drag. I'm your token Apple fanboy, and it really ***** to have such a glaring problem go unacknowledged.

Don't buy an ibook. I'm sorry I did.

There are quite a few "odor neutralizers" on the market these days. I can't help but think that some judicious use of one of these products (I would try Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer) with a Q-Tip on the keyboard would at least help (for awhile).

Of course, shut down the computer, unplug it, and remove the battery before using any liquid on the keyboard and allow to dry overnight before reassembling and using the iBook.

If using the odor neutralizer on the top of the keyboard doesn't work, I would try the same procedure on the underneath side, again leaving the keyboard out to dry overnight before reassembly and use.

Instructions for removing the keyboard can be found here:

I've bought three of them, and I'm glad I did. None of them smell.

And welcome to Apple Discussions, Darrenism.

For what it's worth, I must add myself to the list of unfortunate owners of smelly ibooks. I first read this thread a few years ago and I thought it was a joke or an exaggeration. But, lo and behold, one day I opened my ibook and out wafted the stank! At first I thought it was the power of suggestion, but once it started to smell, it really blossomed. Old cheesy sneaker smell. This was about 3-4 years after I bought the ibook new, with no AppleCare (big mistake).

Being a cheapskate, I am NOT spending $60 on a replacement keyboard now that I see several posts about having the stank return anyway, and being a frequent user of NYC taxi cabs, I can assure everyone that there is nothing worse than the mingled aromas of B.O. and any type of perfume!

I am about to buy a new iMac soon anyway, so I'll probably just live with it for a while. I guess I'll try the wipedown method using non-alchohol wipes, but if it's something emanating from the plastic itself, I don't see that making much of a difference.

I do appreciate knowing that it's not just my ibook. Let those who scoff beware of the stank! It could happen to you...
Thanks for all your suggestions.
