Well, I'm 99% sure that's where it's coming from. Just peel back the corner of your sticker and take a sniff. I've realized that getting all the adhesive residue off is not worth the risk to my health (solvents - yay!) or the time it will take (there appears to be a piece of perforated aluminum that is also stuck under there, maybe with the same stinky adhesive). So I'm going to try the Apple Store in Houston over Thanksgiving (no store in Austin!?). Let them take a whiff and see what happens. I may print out some of this thread for backup, I talked to a friend in tech support at Apple who had never heard of this problem...
If anyone successfully gets all the dang adhesive off their keyboard let us know!

This is becoming a serious issue for me now. After noticing , the pugnent odor coming from my mac I did everthing you would expect someone would do to get rid of the smell. Well after cleaning it over and over again with no improvment in odor I recently searched to see if others were experiencing the same thing. Well sure enough I found this thread.

After reading this thread I wasn't so ammused like many of you, I felt more like, "this suks," everytime I work on my machine I am forced to smell this raunchy mac. I love my mac but now I can't stop thinking about how this machine I am working on really smells.

We pay a lot for our macs, these machines should not have similiarities with walking into a room thinking to yourself "Man who stinks."

I have used Pledge to take adhesive off of glass. Wonder if it would work on an iBook? Don't think there's anything in Pledge that would hurt the finish.

There is a product called Motsenbocker's that is made for adhesive removal. They make three different spray formulas to take different substances out of clothing. One is for proteins (blood, food--in a green-labeled bottle), one is for graffiti removal (pen, ink, markers--in a blue-labeled bottle), and one is for grease and adhesive removal (in a red-labeled bottle). You can find it in hardware, home improvement, or office supply stores. It's pricey, but very effective. Sometimes the red-labeled bottle is so effective that the drips from the spray remove its own label!

One dropped it off and did her best Molly Shannon/Mary Catherine Gallagher "Sometimes when I get nervous I put my iBook under my armpits and then smell it like this..."

Seriously, it's a bummer.

My iBook 800 G3 started smelling after about a year - curiously, a week after I bought a new G4 iBook, and was getting ready to sell this one. So I've sent it back to Apple (AppleCare contract) twice, who says they don't find anything wrong.

But I found this thread while holding for an AC technician this morning, and am waiting for a call back. It's true that it smelled like the iBook itself was burning inside, but when I removed the keyboard, it seems that the smell comes from the keyboard, and not from the guts of the iBook.

Following up on my previous post, I did a test.

I turned my iBook on, after removing the keyboard, and let it run Seti@Home for about two hours - that uses a lot of processor time, and heats it up pretty quickly. The smell didn't come back; this shows clearly that the smell is coming from the keyboard, and not the inside of the iBook.

I am laughing and also so glad to know I am not imagining things! I was so confused by this smell and couldn't believe it was the computer and didn't want to think it was me!
So -at least it isn't too bad on my iBook - it comes and goes - but so grateful to know it is the machine - and I am not crazy!

And the next "extra" keyboard I have in our schools I may try a replacement!

Just a suggestion:

I would analyze both kind of plastics under a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy).

It may be caused by bacteria in "refurbished/recycled" plastic reducing its quality. The question is: is this plastic biodegradable? Is there anything better than knowing when it will be destroyed? EcoApple?

The smelly one may be in a deterioration process.

Oh My God!!!!!!!!!!! this keyboard is stinking bad now!!!!!!!! it started off a few minuets ago and remembered this post... Any one found a solution??? I looked in the back of the keyboard and found that the sticker is a big sticker and that to take it off is a major pain, plus risky... It's all over the kwybord... It's the siuze of the keyboard... it's the one that has the instructions right???

Man this stinks, I thought at first, "man this guy needs a shower", then realized it wasn't my client, but my iBook.... ufff I started to feel embarrased as you could imagine...

Pls anyone find a solution for this manly smell???!!!

I finally gave up and bought a new keyboard on eBay for $60.
If you do this be careful to make sure it is a NEW keyboard you're buying or you may be in for the same old stinky.

I'm not afraid to open my iBook anymore!

How easy is it to change a keyboard?

Does anyone know if the new G4 iBooks will be having the same problem in two years?
