ibook smell

I am getting a funky smell coming from my keyboard. I have cleaned the board with some canned air but it still stinks. It doesn't smell like anything burned but more like body odor (yeah, I know, "eww"). I keep my computer pretty clean and I bathe regularly, so I don't know what it can be. Any suggestions? Thanks.

So you want people's iBooks to go from smelling like they never bathe to smelling like they're never sober? Some how, I don't think that is much of an improvement.

Seriously, though, a dab of scented oil (cinnamon, maybe?) placed strategically on the keyboard might not be a bad idea. I read this entire thread months ago, and am not going to go back through to see if it's been done (don't remember one way or the other), but it is just something I thought of. If it's been tried, well, [Emily Litella voice] never mind.

Oh, man. This thread is just abouyt the last thing I ever expected to see.

For several months now, my roommates and I have been going crazy trying to figure out what smells in the apartment. We used to have a roommate who kept two dogs and a crow, in fact we had a verty serious problem with him because of the smell of the animals - or so we thought. He moved out almost a year ago, and then we got all new carpeting and painted the whole place, but the smell was still here! We're going nuts trying to figure out what smells, right? Like, I'm starting to think maybe it's wafting up through the floor from the apartment downstairs, or something - it's making me nuts.

And after months of this, I discover this very interesting and unexpected thread, and a lightbulb goes off over my head, and I take a good whiff of my frequently used two-year-old iBook's keyboard...

...and, nothing. Keyboard has hardly any smell at all.

Drat. 😟

At the risk of making this thread into a household tips column, my husband and I have rental real estate. Any smell you can name, we've had to deal with it. This is no solution, but, I hope, an effective cover-up to make life more bearable in your apartment until you happen upon the origin of the cause so you can eliminate it. Glade (Johnson Wax) now makes a "Plug-in" room deodorizer that has a little fan in it. This little gizmo takes care of the most offensive odors we've come across. Bet it would help your make your situation better until you can finally figure out the cause of your problem.

hmm...2 things

1. Make sure its your iBook.

2. I have never cleaned my ibook bathed it etc. Are you sure during one of your cleaning methods (whatever that may be) That you didnt spill something in the keyboard while cleaning it. Also were you the only one using your ibook. Maybe your friend was using it in the other room and spilt something in there, or was eating someting and it was messy and he/she tried cleaning it out but most of it got stuck in the keys. Use a flashlight and magnafy glass and search your keyboard.

In order for there to be a smell there must be a substance and searh long and hard for it.

Send me an e-mail at info@lexxweb.com for anything further.

Finally, thank the ibook gods, after two years of living with the horribly stinking keyboard, (my favorite description remains the curry-eating derelict) -- the space bar broke. So, I had a legitimate reason for seeking a replacement.

The amazing folk at applecare replaced the keyboard overnight. And so far, so good -- no smell. It is like having a whole new computer -- I'm stunned, really.

I wish now that I'd logged back in and saw that some people were getting theirs replaced BECAUSE of the smell!!

Anyway -- has anyone who replaced the keyboard had the smell come back? Just curious.

I've been getting used to the smell now... don't know if that's good or not since it could be me some day.... never know....

My keyboard stinks APPLE.... I'm actually thinking of taking it in for the apple care since I belive that this "lovly" scent isn't part of the packadge I bought and would be considered a flaw and repariable by replacing the keyboard....

I never actually thought of replacing the keyboard, but well.. it is the most obvious solution... now!!!

all the best,
G.-

In answer to your question: yes, the stench has come back to haunt me, though it's not full blown yet.

I'm one of the original posters on this thread. My keyboard started to reek at about the 2-year mark. It got so bad I ended up buying a new keyboard on eBay. Problem solved...for many months. Unfortunately, I can smell the stench slowly creeping in again. I think it's time to retire this computer.
