Green screen when playing any Quicktime movie within a browser

Hi,

Here are the Plugins installed for Safari.

I updated all the Canon software from the Canon site (a 0.1 increment in most cases), rebooted, but that made no difference. I then removed all the Canon software and any Application Support and Preference files I could find in the System and my Library and re-booted and that made no difference either. I still see just a green screen when playing back streaming Quicktime movies. Yet, it was working fine no more than a couple of weeks ago when I looked at some of the Apple business tips videos. So something has corrupted Quicktime and/or Safari. All the latest updates for Quicktime, Safari, Javascript, System files, and Apple apps (iPhoto) have been installed, as I've rarely found an issue with upgrading to new versions.

Hi,

I logged out then back in a Guest User with minimal access, ran Safari and streaming movies still would NOT play in browsers.

I then logged back in as me, with Admin access, and ran Disk Utility to first: Verify the Disk -- all was OK.

Then did a Permissions repair. And these were the permissions needing repair, below: A lot of them! And many pertaining to Quicktime. Unfortunately, doing this made no effect. Still no improvement. And running the Permissions Repair again produced the identical list of repairs. It says they have been repaired but not so, apparently.

I thought this must be the issue. But then I did the same thing with my older G4 Laptop (but also has the latest OS 10.5.7, Safari 4.02 and Quicktime 7.6.2 and other Apple updates, albeit for Powermacs not Intel), and which has minimal applications on it (it serves as a media server for the stereo) and it plays movies fine. But ... doing a Permissions Repair on it produced a similar list and they also would not repair (doing a Repair again a second time produced the same list). Yet it plays movies fine. So I'm stumped.

a) why are the laptops refusing to repair their permissions?
b) and might this be the problem on the Intel machine.

Is the answer removing Safari and installing an earlier version (I have a stand-along installer for v.4) and/or doing the same with Quicktime (I have 7.6).

Permissions repair complete

Well, conundrum solved. I began to realize that all the movies that failed to play in a browser, or in my own website files in iWeb, and as movies in my Keynote talks -- they, too, turned green and would not play video -- well, they were all H264 codecs.

When I played them in Quicktime, and looked at the movie properties they were listed as being Canon H264. Suspicious. I found one lingering bit of the Canon software, CanonH264Component in the Component folder of the main Library. Removing it fixed the problem. The Canon software package installs this component for the H264 movies created by the Canon 5DMkII camera (which I just got), but why is not clear. Its movies play fine with Quicktime as is. So there is an incompatibility between the Canon codec and most software that prevents any H264 movies from playing properly. I'm sure if I search around now I'll find this is a well-known bug! Well known to all except Canon!

Thanks for your help. Though I'm still puzzled why lots of library files now come up with the wrong permissions. But it doesn't seem to affect things. I'm sure that's an issue for the next Apple upgrade.
