USB Issue - This device could perform faster

Hi, I have just purchased an iPhone 3GS and have a problem with my USB connection. When I connect the iPhone to my computer (running Windows XP) I get a message to say: This device can perform faster, see pic http://www.flickr.com/photos/24748736@N00/3724526038/

This is suggesting that I am not plugging it into a USB 2.0 port, but I am and I had an iPod touch and did not experience this problem. When I plug the iPhone into a friends laptop I do not get this message.

This is really frustrating as it means any Sync with my computer is performed very slowly.

Any ideas what might be causing problem or know how to fix it?

Yep, I tried messing with it all today as well. Uninstall/Reinstall, update drives... still have the same problem. What is odd is the 16GB phone my wife has works fine over the same setup, and from what I have found so far it seems to be the 32GB 3GS that people are seeing this issue on.

So now into day 2 to get a single sync to finish. :-((lots of music)

i just did this on my dell XP Pro laptop. This 3gs is a major piece of crap.

The 3GS isn't the major piece of crap .. the common denominator here is PC/Windows (XP and Vista). I have received this error on other (non-Apple) peripherals over the years with Windows XP.

I have never received this error on my PowerMac or MacBook Pro (nor on my Windows XP box) when connecting my iPhone .. it's likely driver or USB-hardware related.

Having the same issue on my MacBook Pro 4,1 in both the Mac OS X 10.5.7 and Windows Vista x64 SP2 partitions. System Profiler says the iPhone 3GS is connected at speeds up to 480MB/sec, but transferring 5MB songs takes 10-15 seconds per file. I've already been to the Apple Store and got a replacement for the USB cable that shipped with the iPhone 3GS. Sometimes bumping the desk or brushing the dock connector and cable causes the iPhone 3GS to temporarily disconnect and reconnect. I'm starting to wonder whether or not there is something inherently faulty with the dock port in the iPhone 3GS itself.

I believe yours is the first I've read that had this issue with a 3GS and a MacBook Pro.

Maybe the correct assumption should be there +may be+ something inherently fault with the dock port +in a population+ of iPhones.

The problem being described is one that I've had in all of my Windows XP-based PCs, but never in one of my Macs.

I wouldn't even know what the MacBook Pro would respond with if it thought a USB device could be communicating faster.

I believe all my Macs have FW 400/800 and USB2 (no USB 1.1)
