Problems with Sony DRX-840u external DVD writer
I have a Sony DRX-840u external DVD burner that I was using with my first generation MacBook Pro. It worked great using Memorex DVD+R and DVD+R DL media until at some point Memorex changed the discs. The packaging changed and it seems like the discs changed too, because the DL discs were giving me a failure rate of almost 100%.
At first I thought I might have gotten a bad batch of discs, but I got a new MacBook Pro which can write DVD+R DL and had no problems. I remember that older external drives used to need periodic firmware updates, but this device doesn't have any tools (Mac or Windows) for doing so. The box has a big sticker on it that says it is Mac compatible.
I see lots of people have this drive but can't seem to find any directions for fixing the problems I'm having. I'd rather burn with the Sony drive because it's MUCH faster but not if it's going to spoil every disc I put in it (especially the DL discs).
What do I do?
